Creative Writing Class via SLU

OK so I promised I would set up a creative writing class via SLU and I haven't forgotten. I would like to get a "class roster" of sorts going here and outline how the class would be run.

Please reply if you think you could devote the time/energy to the class and if you think you'd be interested in joining up.

My first class would be on flash-fiction or short-short fiction. Flash fiction is defined generally as any fiction under 1,000 words. It's hot stuff in the literary world right now (or has been for a couple of years) and lots of journals are publishing it. It's also perfect for a medium like SL. I'm thinking the course would be 5 weeks long -- with the first week dedicated to organization/get to know you/ set up. The remaining weeks would be traditional type workshops. If you've never taken a writing workshop they function like this: Each student brings something to share with the group. Everyone reads the piece and makes written comments. Then the group comes together and discusses the piece with the writer. There are only two real rules to workshop: 1) The writer can't speak while the story is being discussed and 2) No personal attacks, everything stays focused on the story and how to improve it. I would essentially make a schedule during the first class with each participant having a piece due at a differen time. Participants would then bring their stories the night they are due, allow us some time to read them and make written comments, then allow time for us to discuss them. We should be able to do this for about three stories in an hour and half length class. My job would be to lead the discussion and keep the class focused on the goal. Your job as a student is to write and read and comment :).

The focus of this class is entirely on making writing better and therefore, any writer is welcome.

If you're interested, please post and let me know. Also, let me know a good night for you. Thursday nights are generally good for me.

I'm not sure how to work the Linden Support thing, as it wouldn't really include a contest or anything, LOL. Therefore, I might charge a very small fee per session just to cover my time and prep -- something like 50 bucks a person or something. Or, if I could work it out with the Lindens, perhaps just have a prize money drawing for each class or something. Suggestions welcome on that :). I don't mind rewarding people for writing, that's for sure!

Thanks! Looking forward to hearing from ya'll.

Hey, Zana, you can count me in. Almost any evening of the week is usually good for me, just about (with the occasional exception). As for Linden support, my understanding is that you don't have to have a contest or give out prize money in order to get your $500 grant. I am fairly certain about this.

Your right Kanker, you dont have to give prizes. You get $500 for the event if its approved and another $500 if the event involves a prize. Since this is a writing class and will better that avatar, that is the motivation to attend, not the hope of prize money.

Oh my God...this is ME!!!
I'm a novelist and I love writing LONG stories but I think I can write some short ones. Tee hee.
Any day is good for me. What time though? I have to be in bed by 9:00 SL time.

Though I'm willing to stay up extra if needed.
;)

I'll definetly send you and IM or something.
Let me know when you have your first class and I'll have something ready!

Thanks ya'll!

I will post soon when I think the classes should start. My only issue is getting my schedule relatively responsibility free for an hour once a week, LOL. But look for updates, I'm hoping to do the "get to know you" class next week. Would anyone be opposed to the class being held on Evie's Island?

And thanks for the info on the support thing, I was obviously confused!

I'd definitely be interested. It's been a while since college and I've been thinking I could use a brush up on my creative writing skills.

Looking forward to seeing when things are held, and I have no problems with attending class on Evie's Island. You guys ever think of submitting for a themed community?

I'd love it if it was NOT on Mon or Tues... I can attend anything after 6 pm PST most of the time Wed - Sun.

I am off work Fri - Mon, so I may be able to attend other times too.

If the time is compatible, I'll see you all there! (8

Oh, and Evie's island is fine with me. (8
