I'm a "newbie" (just two weeks) and I just got my 512 m land and it's... well it's a cliff. I'm trying to build on it and to some degree I copied my neighbor's foundation design, but I could really use some help. Will any of the kits out there work for land that is a sheer cliff? Also, if your land is "vertically challenged", then how can one open and assemble the house kits? Can this be done in the sand box? At this point I'm sort of clueless and any help or recommendations would be so greatly appreciated.

Im not on a cliff, but my land is rugged. I built myself a large platform so I can have a flat place to build. Its up in the clouds, about 150m up. Thats one solution for building or assembling a house kit.
You can add supports, or stilts, for most houses to make your build work with the terrain. Good luck, have fun with it.

go to Enceladus, where most of the sim is river cliff or mountainside. there are small dwellings on the river cliffs, a couple of castles on mountainsides, and on the highest mountain, which falls all the way down to the river, there's a huge bridge being built. give you some ideas there.

Here's my tip for building in the air: Place a tall cube prim in each corner of your plot, just inside the border. (Turn on the border display from the menus or by typing 'P' if your chat is closed.) As you place each one, go to the Object tab in the edit menu (expanded) and type the same number into the Z Position field for each. 100 might be a good choice. Now make a floor-like cube prim somewhere near the middle of your plot, sit on it, then edit it and set it's Z Position to 100 as well. Now you are up in the air, can see the extent of your land, and have a surface to drop prefab building pieces on. Just don't forget to delete all these floating prims when you are done, so the airways don't get cluttered.

I've always been fond of building to the land... in this case have you considered looking at some of the pueblo style houses....
I think a set of houses set into the cliffside would be really cool.
Another idea, go to Clementia and look at Jakes Waterfall.. who says a 'house' has to be a house anyways?
In Seacliff Fallingwater and Eddie have made some wonderfull tree dwellings, rising above the land...
Run around the world and see if that inspires you.
Siggy.

Siggy is right. There are lots of alternatives to houses. A house is a traditional build, something familiar. We dont have to eat, sleep, or go to the bathroom, we dont need to have a house. But, if you really want a house, thats what you should do.
Just explore and maybe build something fun and work with the terrain. Just include a nice seating area of some sort so you can entertain, thats all you really need.

My next door neighbor Jopsy Pendragon in Rua has created a couple of spaces that actually go underground. Not sure how he did it but they're awsome. Might want to ask him, he's very nice.

Check out my Lookout in Rodeo on the bluff above Rodeo Bay. It was the first structure i built here. The parcel was small and VERY vertical. It's very low prim and was built on stilts to give me a flat surface with a big area to work in.
