HELP! Black Screen in Blender

I just started learning Blender. I don't know if these are problems with Blender alone or the scripts. My main window turns black and my object's lines turn red every so often. I don't think this is normal. It has been happening more often.

Also when I select a vertice to move or use the wheel to loosen or tighten at times it does not move. The transform manipulator turns grey as if it is ready, but nothing happens.

My card is an EVGA Nvidia 8800GTS 512Mb
AMD 6000+ Dual Core
4Gb Ram (3.2Gb available on XP 32bit)
20Gb free HD space in the partion Blender is in (5Gb free in C drive with the OS)
750watt PSU

Oh, can someone tell me how to zoom in and out while vertices are selected. I need to zoom out when I'm moving vertices.

If you aren't on the latest nvidia drivers try updating. If you are then try disabling anti-aliasing in the driver. Beyond that I've no suggestions.

The new drivers seemed to help the black screen problem. It was happening when I moved my mouse to the button window. Thanks
