I'd be happy to help and demonstrate in the sandbox today, if you're on. Just IM me later today around 2-3pm PST.

Here's what I do:

1) Link a logical group of prims, such as the foundation and first floor walls. Don't worry about small things like furniture. Name the object accordingly, and in the description enter the x, y, z position coordinates
2) Repeat for each major section. If it's a small enough house you may be able to just select everything and link it.
3) When they're all linked up, take all the major sections into your inventory
4) it's up to you if you want to link all the furniture and interior details. If so, link 'em all up and do the same. It's easier to do this after the major portions are gone since you can see the small stuff more easily. You can usually drag a marque around the objects to get them all in the same selection. Make sure "Select only my objects" is selected in the Tools menu.
5) Re-build your house, using your descriptions to make sure everything is good.
6) Take everything and put it in an appropriately named folder.

Notes: I like to link everything, although techinically I guess you don't have to. This way I only have to worry about selecting once. Also, my houses tend to be simple enough that I can select the house structure by shift-clicking.

Good luck, and make sure you name everything!

when in edit mode click off the house and drag the transparent yellow box over the whole house, then you can do a Take Copy and it will go into your inventory as one object. Just be sure the whole house is within the yellow outline. You may also want to check the Tools> Select Only My Objects. Give it a test using 3 or so prims that are unlinked before trying this so you get it right :)

Yah, what Toy said. I was very happy when I blundered on that...after spending better part of my experience here linking large chunks together and saving them seperately. =\

And to make it easier, go to the Tools menu and turn on "Select Only My Objects" so that dragging a selection frame around the whole house doesn't get pieces of your neighbors' builds too.
