Hi.
Couple questions, maybe someone here can answer them for me. Thanks in advance.
1. Is all the public land gone now in SL? Meaning, no more claims?
2. I have a 512 m2 land allotment that came with my membership. If I were to own more than 512 m2, would I be charged more US Dollars to play SL?
3. The linden dollars that you can exchange for US currency - can it be put towards SL subscription fees?
Homeless and very confused, Omen

Anyone can make their land public so in theory you could see some but in practice you aren't likely to see any with today's land prices.

Yes. you can see the rates when you log into the Your Account web page and click on Land Use Fees.
3. The linden dollars that you can exchange for US currency - can it be put towards SL subscription fees?
Linden Lab doesn't deal directly with money exchanges. Of course you can set up an account with Gaming Open Market and exchange your Linden Dollars for US dollars to do whatever you want with.

1. Yes 2. Best bet is to post a request in the Land for the landless thread here: /invalid_link.htmlIf you go above what land allotment you are paying for, you will have to pay for a higher land tier in US$, charged to your credit card monthly. 3.If you go to gamingopenmarket.com or ige.com and exchange your L$ for US$ you can spend those US$ on anything you like, SL fees included

Omen, Welcome to SL! I have a few answers for you. 1. There is no longer any public land that can be claimed. All land is either sold by individuals, through Linden Auctions, or distributed through the "Land for the Landless" program. 2. with a Premium membership of 9.95/mo you are allowed to own 512 m^2 of land without any additional Land Use Fees See Land Fees FAQ If a land purchase pushed you beyond your current allotment, then you would be prompted to increase your Land Tier to accomadate the purchase. An in-game dialog box pops up to inform you of any necessary changes to your Tier prior to completing your land transaction. 3. Yes, Linden dollars can be used to pay for your monthly fees. Here is some info that was posted In the 1.2 FAQ From: someone Still want more? Residents can own as much land as they choose; change the amount of land you own and your monthly fee adjusts accordingly. Your bill at the end of the month will be based on the peak amount of land you owned during the previous 30 days. Discounts accelerate as you move up the ladder - $5 per month buys 1/128 of a sim, $25 pays for 1/16 sim at a 38 percent discount, $75 equals 1/4 sim at a 50 percent rate cut…all the way up to $195 for an entire sim at a whopping 69 percent price break. Don't like to part with real-world cash? You can also use your hard-earned Linden Dollars to offset land fees. Questions about billing? Email billing@lindenlab.com. However, there is a third party Currency Exchange servicethat trades L$ for US$. GOM - Gaming Opem Market You get a much better exchange rate at the GOM than the Lindens offer. I recommend that you check it out before giving those L$ back to LL as payment for Land Use Fees Have Fun! Champie

Several days ago I asked the exact same questions. The problem that nobody told you about is how do you get enough $Linden to pay for your fun and games and your land. At L$250 to a $1 US, you either need to be selling a lot of something or other in SL or doing something to pay for more than a small amount of land. People may mention dwell to you -- an amount of money you get per day based on the amount of people who visit your land, but it's very small to non existent, so don't count on it. So, again, the problem becomes, if you don't want to pay USD, how do you get Linden $?

From: someone Originally posted by Vautrin Hannibal So, again, the problem becomes, if you don't want to pay USD, how do you get Linden $? Back in the post stone-age days of SL, I did contests. Lots of events that gave away prizes. I was able to make a few hundred a week. That was more difficult a year ago, due to the old tax system we had. My best suggestion for newbies these days is to develop a talent and forgo buying land the first few weeks. Learn scripting, build stuff or photoshop up some clothes to sell. You don't really need land to do any of this. Check the forums. You will find people who will let you put stuff to sell on their property. Some will do it for free, or charge for space. Lastly, its not a very good idea to spam events or gatherings with "who wants to buy a (insert thingamabob here)? L50". That just gets annoying.

Thank you to everyone who replied! The answers helped clear up my confusion.
I have one more question. Say I use all of my 512m2 land allotment for residential propery. Does renting a store space at a mall/market count as extra m2 space - in effect, costing me real money? Or will this only cost me L$, or maybe nothing at all, depending on who I'm renting from?
I looked at the FAQ listed in a previous reply but couldn't find an answer to this question.
Thanks, Omen.

Any land that you don't actually own won't affect your land tier fees. As far as I know every apartment landlord and mall/shop owner charges for rent in L$. If they want US$ from you, it might be time to shop around.
