Hi, I'm about two weeks into second life and my newest project is on "how to make hair." I've learned the basics http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2007/01/day-129-creating-prim-hair-part-1.html and I know how to make hair texture. However, what I'm having problems with is styling and making it. I hear that making hair is kind of a trade secret, but I was wondering if anyone had time to gift a few tips or tutorials on second life. I'd be really helpful. Also, if there are any other websites out there that give great tutorials. I've tried researching and didn't find much, same with hitting the search bar here.

That tutorial is by far the best you're likely to find. If it doesn't show how to create prim shapes you've seen and want to incorporate into your hair, find a hair that has the features you want and examine it in the editor. It helps, of course, if the hair is mod-able.

Making hair is more art than procedure. It may take longer than two weeks.

Best of luck on your hair building adventures. :) I agree with Anya...creating hair will most likely take you some time. I don't think there is really a trade secret to making hair, but you do need to take time to learn how to manipulate prims and how to work with textures.

For myself, after a lot of misteps, I found the easiest way for me to build hair is sit on a pose stand and build hair around my avi's head. By doing that it helps me to position prims and avoid the dreaded helmet head look. Also, I never build in sunrise/sunset light either because as beautiful as that lighting is for your avi's skin, it doesn't offer the true color of your textures and can cause some serious tonal clashes. I have a gazillion hair prototypes in my inventory. Pretty much, I wear my prototypes, and depending on the response I get from people I see around sl, that's the deciding factor for me in terms of investing the time and mooola perfecting that style and selling it in sl. I really hope these tips help. :)) Happy Hair building!
