Hi all.
I'm trying to make some rigging for a yacht and thought about using a sculpty to make bent ropes and save on prims. Is there a lower limit to the diameter I can make rope visible in SL for general view or does the graphic card capabilities of the individual viewer play a major part? I'm looking to have ropes 0.015 SL units in diameter.

Thanks for any advice.

The lower dimensional limit for normal prims is 10 mm, 0.01m...so you should be OK.

(I say "normal" prims because there is a trick with a dimpled sphere to create so-called "torutured" prims that are very much smaller than the normal 10 mm limit. Even these tiny prims are visible, though. Jewelers use the trick a lot.)

I don't know much about sculpties...but I would think they'd not be the best choice for ropes. Well, maybe a knot. But for a length of rope, a segment of a skinny torus might work better.

Thanks Lindal.
The reason I'm thinking of sculpty is to do a series of ropes linked by the sculpty trick of zero dimensioning for the connecting portions. That way I could get a whole series of rigging ropes using just one prim.
I'll keep experimenting.

Sculpties would be able to handle the .015 diameter ropes very easily. In fact, if you use oblong maps, you would be able to make lots of ropes from one prim. I could very easily imagine making a rope ladder from one prim, for instance.

Keep in mind that you are still restricted to a 10 meter box unless you use mega-prims. Mega-prims work with sculpties, but can be tricky to align as they cannot be resized.
