Hi everyone!

I'm pretty new to SL so my idea might be an overly ambitious one for the time being... however, I think it would be really neat to have an in-character fantasy genre community. I think it'd be a project worth thinking about at least: sort of medieval/magical-type village or environment with the AVs within it roleplaying in-character (original characters; not looking for like, a recreation of the JRR Tolkien world). I think one of the coolest things that could come from this is that it wouldn't be like other typical online RPGs which require killing off mass amounts of monsters and things like that; it'd be based on social activities and whatnot.

This is a very small exerpt of what I'd really like to say; I have a whole lot of ideas but I think it'd be more inclusive to first hear what others have to say about this possible community and also hear what others think about a place like this.

Like I said... heh... I'm pretty new, so if this already exists, then just point me in the right direction... but if this project seems like an idea several are interested in, then post and provide some insight. :)

Darkwood is a midieval / fantasy theme. There isn't overly much roleplaying right now I think, however there have been other requests to add some.

All I can say is, I will do my best not to break the mood or flow of anyone role playing in DarkWood. I'm not really great at it myself, but I can understand how some people really like it.

You should talk with Fey Brightwillow some, she is also very interested in RolePlaying and is a part of DarkWood.

I'll definitely try to do that...

When I arrived in SL people directed me at Darkwood but they gave me the impression that Darkwood was based on like, a mid 1800s village. And, seeing the church and whatnot, I thought that was true.

Anyway... Thanks for responding. Anyone else..?

I am very much in support of what you are trying, and have recently joined Darkwood as resident Bard and Luthier. I have a small bardic supplies shop where I sell instruments that have music and other affects attached. I also plan to host song contests, concerts and storytellings at the Darkwood Park stage and Wild Boar Tavern.

Look forward to seeing you up our way.

Fantasy RP

I too have recently become a member of the SL family, and I have found it incredible versatile in regards to RP. I've already come up with several avatars to fit the genre, even though I haven't had a reason to yet. I, like yourselves, also asked around about any RP group that was currently active, and was unable to find one.

How about this... Why don't we try to get together with others who are interested in starting some type of RP group and getting (perhaps) an evolving storyline going? I've worked on several online games, mostly running plotlines and story creation... So I can offer my services for that. I also love to RP, and would be willing to take part in something structured if there are others with the same desires. Any place that can accomodate custom characters and scenery is pretty cool in my book.

If any of you would like to take part in something like this, I will be checking this thread frequently. Also, if you see me running around in-game, feel free to say hello and introduce yourself.

I am defnitely interested. Perhaps we can form a new group dedicated to promoting rp interaction in SL. I would love to contribute to such a project.

I am interested in RP… and I know other DarkWood residents have expressed interest in this as well. We have had a few RP events and these have had a good turnout, but I wanted to do a regular event with characters and some type of storyline each week, where it might build on the previous weeks while allowing for people who have been at every event, people who have attended a few events, and people who have never attended one but want to join in. I’ve been trying to plan this for a while, but RL (as well as other SL projects) have thwarted my efforts.

I’d love to help get this going if at all possible.

Daemioth, it sounds like you visited the village. How did you like it? I’m not sure if you saw the rest of the sim or not… there are quite a few great builds out there that are not quite as mid 1800’s. (8

Also, if you go to the village right now, our streets are colored... we're hosting an event to name the streets and Ama colored them to make it easier for people to participate in the naming event. Don't worry... it'll be back to normal next week. (8

Yes, I've seen lots of DarkWood and frankly... I'm amazed. It's really a beautiful place. I go there often just to look around, actually. Run into nice people, too. It's my favorite place to be aesthetically and I love that people are really working together to make that 'kingdom' happen.

I think it'd be great to have an area that is in a constant state of RP... seems, however, that there isn't enough land in any one place to build a community like that. Perhaps when new land opens up it'd be neat to create a completely RP domain?

In the mean time, I'm thinking I might create a Group in preparation for something like this. Perhaps something simple like RP Fantasy with the AV titles being IC (in-character) or something like that--that'd also be useful as those with the IC would be in character and those without would not be, sort of as a reference. As far as online RPing is concerned, I did a -lot- of it back in the day on AOL back when the fantasy genre took hold of the Member Rooms-Arts and Entertainment area and people were generally articulate and wonderful to RP with.

Anyhoo, babbling. I'm gonna make that group, and if anyone wants to join, of course throw me an IM in-game or, I suppose for now I'll leave the Group "open" for all members to join, so running a search on RP Fantasy and joining would be okay. This is all very much so a prelude of course... just getting the numbers.

If anyone has any questions or comments, keep responding to this string, heh!

I was going to run a game but it never happened do to lack of interest at the time. I solved the size problem with a set of 60 x 60 grids that rez a town, forest, dungeons, a graveyard, and could rez whatever is needed. The grids have a wall that rez with background scenery on them. They even rez 5x5 squares on top of the ground for combat.

I can't really afford to keep them up so I rez them in Olive or the new area from time to time. I have to reset about 200 scripts when I do so I don't do it often. They work well for the canned adventures zantras is talking about.

RP in DarkWood
08-13-2003 08:09
Some of us had sort of an impromptu meeting last night at the DarkWood Inn. That area has now been designated as an RP spot, which can generally be assumed stretches out into the rest of the village, although having no say in what happens in DarkWood and individual buildings, take that as a tentative assumption.

If you're interested in becoming a part of the RP group we're setting up, make an avatar and go to the Inn and check it out. It's right on the water, and can be assumed that if you're lacking a reason for being there, say you came in on a merchant ship or something. If that doesn't suit you, decide why your character is there and play the part. If you do check out the Inn, there is a book outside the door with information on the basic rules for the RP area put into place last night. Please take the time to check these out and get a better sense of what is expected of anyone who wants to take RP seriously in this area. Let me just mention however, no one is obligated to do so in DarkWood.

Eventually, we're hoping to have some sort of history for DarkWood. For example, the outlying buildings, houses, etc. are there for a reason. What is that reason? Some of them already have them, while some others don't. Hopefully, this will all be posted to this discussion board or some other medium of dispersion. For now, we'd like to take it slow and let people get a feel for their character, so working on a specific storyline a this point is not needed. If you would like to build up an interaction with someone/something in town, go right ahead. That's what we're all hoping for. This should give most people chance to get to know each other In Character (IC) and develop friendships, rivalries, etc.

Just a few tips from the meeting last night: We'd like to keep whatever this turns into as an original idea, unique to Second Life. This is where the need for a structured history and setting comes from. What that means is that we'd like to keep everything relative to the setting. This means we'd really not like to see Cloud Strife wandering around, no Bilbo Baggins, and so forth. Also, no massive swords that block out people's view of the sun. We'd like to try and keep everything to scale and make it as authentic a setting as possible. This also stretches into character interaction. If you decide to come and RP, have your character introduce himself to everyone present IC, instead of automatically knowing everyone's name. This will allow for good relationship building and reduce the number of blank stares from IC people who wonder how the heck you knew their name!

Also, there has been a group set up for this, as Daemioth mentioned earlier to be used for a similar purpose. Created last night, we'll most likely use the title to denote an IC state, so that people can quickly tell who is interacting in a roleplaying fashion. If you would like to become a part of this group, please check

I have rambled long enough... Please post with questions, concerns, or comments. We look forwarding to seeing you all there!

Let me finish what I started...

"Also, there has been a group set up for this, as Daemioth mentioned earlier to be used for a similar purpose. Created last night, we'll most likely use the title to denote an IC state, so that people can quickly tell who is interacting in a roleplaying fashion. If you would like to become a part of this group, please check with Zantras Sklar, Daemioth Sklar, or anyone you may see running around in DarkWood with IC before their name. We should be able to field any questions on who to contact, etc."

There.

Just another note... the RP area is at the Boar's Head Tavern, not the Darkwood Inn... The Boar's Head Tavern is on the lake in the Darkwood sim, while the Darkwood Inn is in the Dore sim on the small lake next to the dock, wishing well, and church.

Hope to see everyone there! We have semi-structured base plans for events... more to come after we interact and start it going! (hopefully during the next several weeks) (8

Hehe... just didn't want people walking into the inn and yelling at Skippy to get in RP mode because of his "smart" shirt... :D

RP in DarkWood
08-14-2003 10:40
Well, it looks (at least to me) like things are getting along well. I had an opportunity to RP with two people yesterday and it helped tremendously on how I am shaping my character.

I also handed out several of the notecards created for the rules and conduct of the IC area. I've been trying to get the word out about our group, so hopefully we'll have more people frequenting DarkWood soon who wish to become involved in the storyline.

I had an idea about this thread, and would like to ask your opinions.

Should we use this thread (or another) some time in the future to post rumors and such? Not everying... Please feel free to keep information you deem as a secret in confidence. What I am talking about could be a rumor of your character's arrival, appearance, quest, etc. If you're playing a traveling merchant, put up a general notice here listing times you may be available, your types of wares, and so forth. If this is done, I believe it should remain an IC post, and the contents of the notice put down in a proper format... Please see an example below.

------------------------------------------
The townsfolk have been whispering lately about strange notices posted on lamp posts and trees around the area of DarkWood, hailing the arrival of Zantras Sklar, purveyor of fine goods! It seems that Zantras will be in the village of DarkWood for the week of 08/11 - 08/15 to sell many interesting items gathered in his travels! Anyone wishing to find Zantras and peruse his goods are urged by the notice to look for him around (place name here) at (time here).
-------------------------------------------

If you have specialty goods, list something about that, too. It'll give people an opportunity to meet with you and get a little RP time themselves.

One other thing I thought of... There may, in the future, be an inability to tell each character apart. Not every character you will ever have will go by the same name, so this is my suggestion on how to handle that issue.

When placing a group title, we could put the character's name in quotes to show an alias. For example... I am currently RPing a character named Zantras. If I wanted to create another avatar, and have him go by the name of Gailen, I would set my title to 'IC "Gailen"', appearing as 'IC "Gailen" Zantras Sklar'. This at least could alleviate any confusion caused by people who may wish to play more than one part in the story at a time.

Anyway... I am very excited about the prospects for the future, and I'm sure we can work our way around any roadblocks we may come up against.

Please let me know of any questions, comments, etc. you may have about this post, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible!

Happy RPing, everyone. And sorry about the long post...

So... I'm having a problem with clothing in the process of making my RP AV...

Does anyone have textures that are similar to tunic-type clothing? What do people have as far as fantasy clothing is concerned? If anyone has a place where clothes of this genre can be bought from, let me know in or out of game. :D Thanks!

i know Candy Apple has some fantasy-ish textures but you'd have to adapt them and make your own clothes probly. i might be talked into doing some custom work if you have something specific in mind and i have time. IM me sometime if you're interested.
