I created two video tutorials on installing OpenSim standalone. You can find them here:

I have to ask, are you planning on making this accessible to the public, or will it just be for your own use? The reason I ask is that hosting a public sim from home is probably not a great idea, just as hosting websites from home usually doesn't work out too well. Home Internet connections typically do not have nearly the upload speed required for things like this. Users connecting to your sim (or grid) will likely experience massive lag.

That said, I've never done it, so I'm just speculating. The only way to know how well it does or doesn't work would be to go ahead and try. But I'd be awfully surprised if it were to perform well.

If it's just for your own use on your own network, though, then that's obviously a different story.

Great tutorials, by they way, Shack. I just watched the first one. Good stuff, very easy to follow.

Glad you received some help but you asked this same question in multiple forums here. This is called spamming and is frowned on.

Next time pick just one forum and post your question. If it not the correct one, you will be directed to the one where you will get the best info.

Hi

I an the owner of a Opensim grid that is soon to go public. I'm looking for content creators and developers to help run and to have some input into the grid.

Servers and the grid is already set up so you will not need to worry about any of that.

Why dont you come and join us and learn as you go along of what a opensim grid can do and then you will be able to decide if running your own grid is for you.

IM me inworld or reply on here if your interested.

All I know is that what you want to do isn't at all easy. And you do need to know about standalones, as that's the starting point for making an online grid.

I once installed a standalone sim on a windows machine. That was the easy part. Then i tried to make it accessible on the local intranet. But i failed to do so. That kept our admin away from creating such an island on a linux server and make it public.

Does anyone here have a good step to step description how to set up an open sim island for public access (also how the firewall need to be configured and such ...) and how much of bandwidth it would need to make it work feasible ? Then i could give it a secnd try and convince the admins to install one over here ;-)
