I'm obviously missing something. I've tried every possibly combination I can think of and now I throw myself humbly at the mercy of better builders than I.

How the samh3ll do you make an octagon?!!! I see them. Can't figure out how you guys are getting the shape...or is it more than one or? Please help!

Thanks!

With 3 prims.

You can make a hexagon or pentagon with two.

I use a center prim across the octagon and two tapered prims either side of it. How does sheer come into it?

I am sooooooo appreciative of the replies (and so quick too!) but a bit more detail/specifics would do the trick ;p

sorry that was off the top of my head, shear may not come into it, but hell something for them to look into :)

Think of it as a rectangle with two trapezoids linked to it ... one above and one below. The trapezoids are tapered cube prims.

Interesting question?

I have just sent you inworld an octagon floor and it is the largest you can build using standard prims due to the cut and taper of those prims.

Edit: Its not the largest I rezzed the wrong on inworld when I originally wrote this. The largest would be with a center prim 10x10 then the other prims would be 7.071 x 10.00 for the top, bottom, and 2 sides to form the cross and the corners that are to be tapered would be 7.071 x 7.071 then follow the below example.

You have to start with a cube/square (I will refer to cube from here on) in the centre.

For the centre cube in this example I size it to 7.075 x 7.075.

From the cube in the centre I then drag/copy 4 times , one to the top, bottom, left side and right side, change their sizes to 7.075 x 5.00 and align them leaving you with a cross formation.

Starting with the very top prim at 12'o'clock drag/copy a prim to the left and one to the right and resize both to 5.00m x 5.00m and repeat this for the bottom prim leaving you with a complete square once aligned.

For the next step you need to change the 4 corner prims for which you have 2 choices.

1) You can use cut path to make them a triangle, this would be done if you wanted to use the prims for an actoagon roof and is most probably the easiest to align. Depending at which way you are working when using cut path 2 prims will need to be rotated 90 degress on the Z-co-ord.

2) You can use Taper and Shear but you will need to rotate all 4 prims on the X-co-ord 90 degrees.

You should now have an octagon.

Word of note, I always align the prims before they are tapered or sheared (or cut) to avoid overlapping or flashing seams. This will vary depending on your method of
alignment.
