Hi again. This time I'm looking for tutorials on making trees. How to make them big. How to keep them at one prim. You know. Just point me. Thanks all.

The easiest, and possibly only, way to make one prim trees is to use the Linden trees. You can select them in the edit tool and place them just like rezzing a cube. They appear randomly by type so just keep rezzing and copying the ones you like until you have the complete set. One prim, looks great, blows in the wind.

My complaint with SL trees is that they bend too much. In a gentle breeze, they seem to bend from the base as if they were made of foam rubber. Real trees just can't bend like that.

Thanks to you both. I had pretty much gotten to the same place already. I guess I'm wondering how the Lindens do it. Maybe they cheat with special tools?

For example, how would I change the response to the wind? Also, the pine trees from the create tool can be super-sized (set everything to 10m). This produces a huge tree that can be used to make a truely virgin growth forest. But the maple tree (the best one in there) won't do this. It stays puny compared to some of the others. Any thoughts?

The way of Linden is a mysterious way.

You can hold Shift and drag the resize boxes to change the size of Linden trees within a certain range. Unfortunately you can't modify their response to the wind. And yes, the Lindens cheat like dogs when they make trees. They are completely different from the things you can normally build. Which is probably good.

Real trees just can't bend like that.
And real people just don't fly like that. What's your point? :)

Leaves - limbs

Regarding trees....

Instead of neeing a whole tree, I have a compadre building a tree house, and will need leafy canopies to drape over the 'platforms' on it, to give some modicum of privacy..

However, they need to be in, more or less, uside down bowl shape. so it can be placed above and over the platform, giving the character room to walk around without being 'in leaf' all the time.

Any low prim sugestions? Could even make an orb, hollow it, cut in half, make transparent, but how do you go about getting the leaf tex's to put on it, so it still looks good?

Don't *put* leaves on, make a texture to do it ...

Yeah that's what I mean....

But I have no idea how to make the leaf texture its self, nor how to make sure it looks 'good' as opposed to just a cruddy looking transparency..

should mention I've only been SL'ing for a week so I have many basic ideas but....

ah ok...
well, I'm not the best texturer, so maybe one of the others would care to intercede here...

The trick is to use an offline graphics editor, most here use photoshop...

But it's not a simple task, I suspect ...

I do have photoshop, thankfully, and the ability to use it fairly well.

I'm figuring it might have to be a 2 or 3 transparency layer effect, to give it some what of a 3d look, and yet at the same time... I'll hope others see the thread too :)

Thanks for your response!

I can help!

Hello Hobbes!

I can only hope your name is an homage to Calvin & Hobbes hehe I'll try to find you in-world and walk you thru a couple of things, but you will probably only need one layer in Photoshop. That is all I use. The hardest part is the cutting out with the magic wand and/or eraser, and finding or taking a picture that will do the trick for you =D For what you wish to do now it should be fairly simple ;)

Just find me or I'll find you!

I agree... The Lindens need to either turn down the wind or stiffen up the wood. Err.. trees.
