It's quite some time since I played with Blender to make sculpties, and I didn't get on with it very well. More recently, I am sure that I read somewhere that it's easier these days with an add-on or something, but I don't remember where I read it - I'm hoping it was here.

So could someone give me some two step instructions on how to get started; e.g.

1. Download the latest Blender(?)

2. Get <add-on> from <somewhere>

3. Get stuck in.

Or maybe there's a quick tutorial somewhere, or a thread here, that will give me that basic start information?

Cheers.

When it comes to Blender, this would be easier:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57C-SdiV9l4

Don't be like that Bri. Blender IS difficult but it IS free and it can do a lot.
Once one realises that menu hunting and button pushing are not Blenders' way, it becomes easier.

Anyway.. Yeah, I know... who cares.

I tried it. I don't know. It is notoriously non-user friendly and non-intuitive.

I am amazed by people who can produce quality sculpties using it.

I found that too when I first tried it, but what I'd read here not too long ago made it sound easier with the script that Gaia pointed to so, after playing with AC3D for hours, and finding that I can do some simple shapes with it but not some other simple shapes, I decided that it isn't very good and I thought I'd have another go at Blender.

Briana, have you watched our videos ? Especially the blender primer ? I think, blender is not soo user unfriendly, but it can do too many things and you can easily get lost. Please do not forget, that blender is absolutley powerfull and it looks like there are a lot of people out there who like it, or at least who use it for whichever reason...

For instance we see about 10000 hits per month on the machinimatrix blog and we see about 200 forwards to Dominos website per month... I can't tell if this is much or not, but at least we see a lot of positive feedback. So it can't be too bad and as you say, there are people out in the world, who can make sculpties with blender... And i hope at least, that our videos help to make the tool better understandable ...

and the last point here... You want to make sculpties in 30 seconds ? you can do this with blender too ;-) You might want to watch this tutorial then ..

Well, I've just gone through the "safety helmet" tutorial and, even though it's probably 6 months or more since I played in Blender so I'd forgotten keypresses and mouse buttons, I have to say that the tutorial got me through it, and that creating sculpties with Blender is a helluva lot simpler now than it used to be. I don't know how much of the improved ease is due to Blender and how much is due to Domino, but Blender is now the programme that I'll use.

The biggest single difference that I can recall is the total simplicity of creating the sculpt map. When I tried Blender before, it was a case of having to jump through all sorts of hoops to get it done. I suspect that most of the improvements are due to Domino's add-on.

I see that you are part of the tutorials, Gaia, and I thank you for them. I've done one and I've read the one about dealing with the LOD at verious distances, which is *very* interesting indeed. A big thank you to all who are involved in those tutorials, and another big thank you to Domino.
