Also,
No I don't think it's me. The forum groupings keep changing don't they?!?!
What gives? I thought there was a forum grouping for discussing changes to the world. Every time I post I have to figure out where best to post my questions. No fair!

I was wondering if an avatar can go underground. Lets say could I maybe place an opening to a dungeon on my land?

That's it. Just like that?

But isn't there space under that hill over there? What's happening with that space? I'm told I can go as high as I want but there's nothing just below ground level. Hmmm...
Weird. Maybe the Lindens are hiding something... Maybe there are Morlocks as well as Lindens. Hmmm... I thought things were a little too perfect in second life. Hmmm... ![]() |

Tinker,
Ignore the rudeness of the last poster. It's not possible to actually burrow underground. But it is possible to make a passable imitation of a cave by covering a valley with prims textured to look like the ground. I have seen very convincing 'underground' rooms created this way. |

... and yes, the forums do keep changing, and it's a matter of great annoyance to many of us.

Actually, the world is build like a mobius strip. Go far enough away from where you started, and you'll be walking on the underside of the ground. You can prove this by finding the sims that have mirrored landscapes... Hills in one where the other has valleys. So that space is used. If you want a cave, dig a hole (which will be a hill in some other sim) and put a big rock over it.
(I'm serious about the hole-with-a-rock-on-it bit, at least...) _____________________

A mobius Strip? (questions on the nature of second life world)
07-08-2004 07:41
I mean, yes, I know what a mobius strip is, but I don't understand. I remember a sim went off line right after the version 1.4 client, so I moved over to where it should have been to see what this would look like. There was a large square chunck just missing from the world and my avatar could not pass inside this area. It was cool.
There were several other sims that also went off line. Were these sims the mobius reflection of the one I was looking at? Do these reflected sims occur in some sort of discernable pattern? If each sim is run on a separate Linux box in a cluster, then are these boxes somehow synchronized? Would they need to be? |

Tiger was kidding; the world is NOT built like a Moebius strip.
As for what you saw: If you're at the edge of the world (a sim border where there is no adjacent sim), you can move your viewpoint camera to see beneath the surface a little bit. But you can't actually hollow out a tunnel or anything. You just have to dig a hole, and then make a roof out of prims. |

As they said, you can't tunnel. I wish we could though. It would be neat to have underground caverns, homes, whatever. If I were an elf, I would be a Drow elf, and Drow prefer to be deep underground.
I have a question. I know that it is not possible, and I seriously doubt the ability to tunnel will ever happen with this engine, but am I worng? Is it possible that they could change the world so someday we could tunnel? Anyone? |

At a guess, I'd say it will be a long time before they add that functionality. Right now, the terrain of a sim is represented as a .raw file, which I believe is just a height map; one z value for each x,y location. Adding tunneling would mean storing an arbitrary number of z values for each x,y location. And considering how our viewpoint camera is preventing from moving underground, doing that kind of clipping for a volume that could potentially resemble Swiss chess sounds like more trouble than it's worth.

one thing Ive seen people do is fake it by raising the top land, lowering the tunnel land, then building a prim ceiling over it.
Its quite convincing , moreso than it sounds ![]() |
