Alright, there has to be SOME Douglas Adams fans around here.

*fishes them out*

good! now, wouldn't it be great if we made our own little Hitchihiker's Guide?

In case you didn't know, the HHGTTG is the little device that the people in the book "the HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy" refer to from time to time whenever they find some random exotic new locale.

Of course, it's hilarious. So is the book.

Now, we could make our own tongue-in-cheek version if it!

It would work like (sorry if it dcoesn't make much sense, i'm typing fast):

1) A small scripted PDA-like device you would attach to your body.

2) A search script (is that even possible) with entries for things written on notecards within the object/script.

3) To get updates you'd need to go to some building and download new updates (maybe a search-and-replace script to update the guide?)

4) Lots of humor about sites, people, etc. within SL. Very self-referencing.

Any other ideas? :D

i'd be up for it. I loved hitchikers guide. Not to sure about the scripting thing, but, i'd love to help with the gathering of research.

That's a great idea.

In the spirit of the radio show, it would be great if it spoke! Entries could be recorded WAVs.

Of course, we'd need a voice actor/volunteer.

Not to mention sound bites can only be 9 seconds long.. could always split em up though.

I love the idea! But... audio makes for a clunky interface, bigger downloads, more trouble, less updatablity and just sucks in genral.

Shameless (but relevant) plug...Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trivia (the original four books) Sunday at 7:30, details here.

I too think this would be a cool idea. Could easily start out as a Web-based knowledge compendium, to separate the content production from the device design and scripting.

The original guide was a thin client, and for updating purposes it would be neat if we could transition an SL Guide in that direction over time. Just need to make sure that whoever successfully scripts a remote data communications network calls it "Sub-Etha."
