Is there an inworld or offworld tutorial on how to make jewelry, like gems, jewels, rings, studs, etc, etc, etc? Or do I have to SWAG this? (Scientific Wild A$$ Guess) Thanks!

Rose

Oh, my PS skills are mediocer, I already make tshirts using Robin's excellent tshirt template. Also know how to make simple earrings, made an ear 'cuff' in bi pride colors that a friend is selling in his shop along side his gay pride ear 'cuff' and says I should do more. :D So I need to learn more before I can try more. Thanks all!

You can start by checking the sticky on how to make the tiniest prims even tinier..

As mentioned, the "tiny prim" sticky will help. But just like anything, it takes tons and tons of trial and error. There are no 'correct' responces on how you can take a prim, reshape it and make it into a creation. There are some tips and tricks, most are kept secret so we keep our competitive edge (grins).

I'd suggest to learn how to use prims well and efficient. Learn how to be an expert at texturing. Once you have a good comfort level with that, then explore into making smaller and smaller prims and how they can be manipulated and combined.

Most of us 'successful' jewelers have been manipulating prims for years. Almost anything can be done if you want to dedicate the time to a well-thought design and perfectly done textures.

Here's some tips that are useful. I wished I learned them when I first started out.

*Making a sphere smaller than 0.010*
1. Create a sphere
2. Give it a texture
3. Hollow: 50
4. Stretch sphere to 0.010, 0.010, 0.010.
5. On the top section where it says "Position, Stretch, yadda", Select the 'Select Texture' option, click the sphere, and put a clear alpha texture on it.
6. You should now see a small sphere within the sphere that you made, you can adjust the "Hollow" to make it bigger or smaller. You can also do these with other shapes, try it!
NOTE: if you texture the sphere again, it will texture the outside too! So make sure you "select texture" and make the outside clear again!

*Making a small chain link for a dangly earring, chain necklace, or bracelet"
1. Create a sphere
2. Hollow to 95
3. Dimple 0.93 & 0.95
4. Stretch it to 0.010, 0.010, 0.010.
and of course you may stretch it slightly bigger if you would like.

I hope this helps, if you ever need any help with jewelry making. Hit me up! I would love to help. I make jewelry and other accessories and even have my own little shop.

I suggest you go look at the "tiny prims" sticky on the top of the "building" forum. It's very useful, too.

If you plan on selling your jewelry, I do not recommend setting any dimension of a prim to 0.010. It will prevent buyers from shrinking your jewelry.

As my latest victim, what used to be a hapless little sphere, lay twitching on the screen, I threw my hands up in disgust. It was then that I turned to the forums for answers. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the alpha texture tip. Now I can shrink em. Mwa ha! Mwa ha ha ha ha ha!!!

I'm interested in making jewellery too, are there any notecards anywhere like the kind of thing at The Ivory Tower. Being in the UK, a lot of the classes take place when I'm in bed, and I like to learn at my pace, in sessions.

I'm more interested in how you turn something into jewellery rather than the building. ie, how you make it attach to an avatar correctly ecetera. I think the building skills largely come from experimenting, once you have the basics.

Eek, sorry Tina. I don't watch threads, so me responding to things requires that I remember to check the thread. I forgot this time.

Anyway, for many small prims, using the techniques in the tiny prim tutorial will work fine. If you want the appearance of tiny beads or gems, textured tortured cylinders will probably work; they're often small enough that nobody will notice the difference. Tortured cylinders aren't always a good way to make links in chains, though, because they have a slight taper to them. Depending on how the prim is positioned, this may or may not be particularly noticable. A more aesthetically pleasing (if probably laggier) way of making links is to take a tube, hollow it, and then profile cut it. You want to cut away everything but a strip of material from the (this is sort of hard to describe) inside edge -- you know, where the hole in the middle of the tube is. This will give you a very round (and potentially very tiny) link. Adjusting the hole size will change the size of your link.
