I'm really looking forward to seeing this, it will be kind of like the sandbox only more so, and a mature area to boot? I expect we'll be seeing a lot of mud-covered nudists!

In short, the Burning Man festival was started many years ago in SF by a guy who was "celebrating" the end of a relationship.

It has since grown to a 5 day artistic hedonism festival in the Nevada desert where, at the end of the 5 days, the effigy of a man (usually very large) is burned.

The long version goes something like this:

In late August thousands of people decend on the Nevada desert to get naked, do a lot of drugs, party like its the end of the world, produce an orgasm of artistic creativity and/or generally celebrate life.

As I remember it, the festival was started when a gentleman was dumped by his girlfriend and burned her (or him) in effigy on a San Francisco beach. (I think it was him to celebrate his renewal of life at the end of the relationship.) Having purged his demons, he came back a year later and did it again, this time with a few friends. This went on for several years, the celebration growng in size along with the burning man, as people got more and more creative in their recration of the effigy.

After about 5 years, the celebration was moved to the Nevada desert where , now, many years later, people are charged admission (to limit the number of people) and they generally join together in groups to set up campsites often based on common artistic themes. You can see everything from wacky car art to body painting to immense, burnable structures that will be consumed in fire at the end of the celebration.

For many artistic types, this is THE event to goto every year, to express themselves in ways they might normally repress due to job/life situations or to just experience one of the largest gatherings of artistic minds in the world. In either case, its a 5 day party in the desert that usually makes Hunter S Thompson's LSD induced writing seem downright tame.

I have to admit that I really don't understand much more now than I did before, other than the fact that it doesn't sound like anything I'm interested in anyway.

So, on with the regularly scheduled discussion.
