Here's a link to a guide that tells you how for various programs, including PS, PSP, GIMP, as well as in Blender as a modeler.
http://robynhuffaker.com/sculptblend/tutorials/tut_mirror.html Basically, what it boils down to is inverting a color channel, based on which axis you're mirroring (X=Red, Green=Y, Blue=Z), and then flipping the entire map horizontally. The invert will flip the map, but cause it to be inside out, and the flipping will fix the inside out problem (Which is also fixable in-world now). May I ask why you don't want to use the in-world mirror option? Just curious. _____________________

What I really want is to be able to mirror on all three, x,y and/or z, right in the editor. If mirror on X can be done, so can the other two.

make a negative image in your image editor (or s -1 in blender). That will mirror in all three axes at once.
But imho that is equivalent to mirroring along one axis then rotate by 180 degree along the same axes ... edit..: i just realised that Keira has allready mentioned the inside out effect, so i removed my comment here. But note, that the inside out effect only appears when you do a mirror along an odd number of axes (1 or 3). If you mirror along 2 axes, the inside-out effect gets automatically cancelled out, so you must not flipp the image horizontally in that case. |

Open the map in photoshop, go to the channels pallet, flip one of the red, green or blue channels horizontally.
Red = X, green = Y, blue = Z. As mentioned, if you flip them all and it turns inside out. |
