The strings are the edges of faces scaled to 0. They will show in a 3D editor such as Blender, but not in world (as it only draws faces not edges). If you have a full rights sculpt map for one of these objects, you could save it and import into Blender to see exactly how it was done.

But basically you just isolate sections of mesh by scaling the connecting faces to 0 on two axis. Oblong ratio sculpties are better suited to this technique as you won't lose as many faces when creating the strings.

There's a tutorial on Youtube on how to make a one prim chair which I've looked at which shows you how to do this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2WvdHYeh_U

I've used it to make some railings for a staircase. Where I'm having trouble is creating a cube with enough vertical faces to allow the most usable sections possible.

The ones I've seen use 8x8 faces which doesn't leave many usable sections once you've separated them all(as it were, as they're not technically separate).

If anyone knows what x and y faces will work once imported that's be handy to know. I've done some experimentation such as 4x16 and 3x21 but I think it has to equal 64 total. Is that right?

Check out Sculptie-o-Matic.
It's free and lets you use in-world prims to build up an object which then gets turned automatically into a sculptie. It lets you do the separate parts of a sculpt with relative ease.
It's a bit limited by sharp edges to the prims but with a bit of smart overlap/merging you can make some impressive objects.
- a fun way to get sculpts without too much headache.
