I dont have the cash, plain and simple, to have my own sim, however someone might like to use my idea, or something.

*1 private sim - all water, no land

*In the middle 1 huge ocean liner, perhaps modelled on the cunard ships lusitania, or titanic.

* No it wont sink/be sunk on the hour or whenever

* Inside is once again modelled on design of the era, with perhaps the exception of a mall or something perhaps

Anyway, I think it would be cool to see a purely water sim exploited to do something like that.

You'd probably need two sims to fit a full sized ocean liner...

But yeah, it's a great idea...

Actually i've been toying with building that exact idea the last few weeks.

Titanic was close to 300 meters, if I recall. That is a lotta prims! Great promotional project.

Why stop at a liner?

I actually was thinking of doing this, but instead with a sort of hovering spacecraft. Why bother sticking to the rules of physics when you don't have to?????

Of course it would be ridiculously futuristic, but in a sort of stylish way....

then there is always the death star

I can perceive one problem with the plan of a ship. The sl camera dose not behave well with interiors. So even if you build the titanic on a 1 to 1 scale. you'd probable find the inside unbearable to be in. Unless you gut the insides and build on a very large scale.

I wish the camera would clip walls, or could be used in a way similar to the camera in parasite eve.

Just use mouselook. Or a really close camera. In RL, that's what we do anyway.

Smaller spaces are more land-efficient. I'm surprised I don't see more of them in SL.

I have to admit, as a first life ex-Navy dude, I have seriously considered trying something like this using multiple ship designs for inspiration.

I noticed about two weeks ago that some "firm"/builder was constructing a scaled down model of a cruiseliner in one of the sandboxes and, sure enough, at least one version of that ship is available as a sailing vessel! Surprise, surprise (no, it wasn't me who did it). Because of the 31 prim limit (30 if you have a 1 passenger cruiseliner!), it obviously does not have huge "prim detail" but I have to admit that the texturing on this craft was excellent.

A second version of the cruiseliner seems to be "parked" in the same sim as the "Oz" attraction - the name of the sim escapes me right now. This cruiseliner is, I believe, based on the same design as the above vessel. However, below decks are two furnished cabins and an aquarium - which render the vessel inoperative/incapable of sailing (if I am wrong and you are the owner, please correct me and tell me how you did it!).

Continuing my own explorations in "naval construction thoughts", having mixed my first life experience with the cruiseliner idea and both the Kazenojin (sp?) and Abbots Airfield areas because I am a bit of an aviation freak, I made my own little "SLS (SimLifeShip) Neversail Aircraft (Carrier) Flight Operations Center" in KU (190, 40)... Alas, this is a "flight deck and above" only "ship" and, as the title indicates, will neversail as it is constructed on land. What is of interest to this thread is that the "tower" is a scaled down/inspired model of an "aircraft carrier island". If you have ever seen the number of radars and antennas sprouting from such "islands" on real world vessels, you'll understand the reason I will never have a "true" model.... not enough prims. This is a work still in progress - as you can easily determine at a glance.... I need to find some specific textures and add perhaps another "observation" level - though numerous "real islands" have as many as five such levels, I will have at most three.

Finally... in my own "homage to the builder/biz firm" mentioned above and the age of the classic crusiseliners, I scavenged the cruiseliner idea and created what will be a "new store" at my place in Butsu (209, 190). Not a direct imitation of the aforementioned ship build, but I am incorporating a couple of their ideas and those expressed in the first post oin this thread (mall/store), reasonably "close" texturing to indicate a ship of the line for a specific period, "classy staircase/ballroom ala Titanic"... all restricted by prim limits of course.

So, I wanted to say that I think the original post in this thread is a great idea... A couple of us have tried the smaller scale "imitations" and, as with cars/smaller ships.. well, a few things get lost in the details due ot the SL limitations.

If someone/a group DOES work on this.. please IM me and let me know if I can help.. I am not the greatest builder (still learning) but I would love to mak at least one item on such a project... if not more... and would certainly act as cheerleader for those more skilled than myself.
