I'm trying to build of one of these windows ... eh... don't know the English name for it... on the outer wall of a house.
Please see the image.
Well, I use a tga image with a transparent opening for the window. For the "thing" itself I use a hollowed cylinder cut in half, blank texture, black color, 30-40% transparent. When seen from front it looks OK. Viewing from sides, it suddenly don't look as it should, looks as flat glass - a flat window.

The "thing..."

Any help? Eh - and what to call the "thingy"?

Thanks in advance.

It looks like you're using 3 prims to make this bay window:

top - hollow, cut cone
middle - hollow, cut cylinder
bottom - hollow, cut, dimple cut sphere

Try making both the top and bottom parts *not* hollow, but retain the cuts.

Aylah, sometimes SL just hates some alpha textures at certain angles. I had a plant someone made that would have part of it disappear if viewed from the side. Very anoying! It could be that this is just one of those instances.

Did you texture all the sides of the prim with the same texture? If so maybe try rotating the texture very slightly?

Thanks all of you.. Yeah I went back and studied some more and found out it was because of the transparent. It happened even if the transparent was set to 1. Set to 0 it was OK, but then again, that would not be suitable for a window.

I'll try the no hollowed version.

Thanks again.

Dang, it was because of the hollowed bottom. No hollow, and all is OK with the transparent window.

What's funny is why did I want a hollowed bottom in the first place? Sometimes my head just don't work *lol*

Thanks again

Yeah, I have a hair texture that disappears from certain angles.. It's kind of.. really annoying. Glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this problem, though.

the answer is.....
the brick wall must have been made with a tga file. and the window must have some transparency.. try redoing the wall with a bmp texture

It's called an "Oriel Window" when it projects from an upper storey, and a "Bay Window" on the ground or multiple storeys.
