Embarrassed to ask...but vould someone tell me where I'm going wrong in copying?..... shift drag combo seems to just move the item. A pointer in the righet direction would make me a VERY happy person!! :)))

Are you sure you have permission to copy it? This might be silly, but you are in edit mode, right? Hmm... Have you tried relogging or going to a different sim?

And you have to shift-drag the EDIT ARROWS, not the object itself. When the object is selected there are a group of three arrows, red (X), green (Y), and blue (Z). If you hover the mouse over one, it lights up a little brighter. Hold down shift, and click and drag. Without holding shift, you just move the object, but ONLY in that direction.

On the same note, when rotating an object, hovering over the red, green, blue bands on the rotate sphere will light them up, and dragging them will restrict the rotation to just that axis.

And by clicking the Local Axis checkbox in the edit window, both the position and rotation controls will self-orient to the rotation of the object. (Though dragging the arrows with both grid and local axis on can cause the object to slide off the grid. It rotates the grid with it. Not very useful.)

another point that bears making is that you have to be on land that allows you to build.

in a similar moment i drug part of a linked object over linden land, unlinked a piece to copy it, and found that i could only move the unlinked portion until i shifted it back onto my land.

doh doh

hehe......also it helps to have permissions set correctly. My husband took it on himself to work on my castle while I was out with friends last night. He spent two hours working on the roof.....learning as he went. Proudly took me into the study when I got home and logged in to show me his handiwork.... ooops.....autodelete set for 1 minute...... gnashing of teeth from him and a salutary lesson learnt...:))
