Have you come up with a plan yet to solve the object usage problem in Jessie? Seems to me that you'll have to remove some other clutter in order to finish the subway. Just a thought... it's something that's on my mind since I moved into a sim with high object usage.

Is it a subway as in an underground train or a subway as in a submarine sandwich restaurant?

Just wondering if my model for a subway station was used at all? I hoped that it would be part of jessie and a small urban enviroment usable for max payne/MAtrix style shootouts. Im not able to log onto SL for a few more days but ill see you guys thursday or so.

Subway is no longer in Jessie.

I can't really play right now, but I would like to know what are you guys makeing exactly? A subway across multiple sims or a eye-candy subway only that doesn't actually run?

Rudeness and solving the underground problem
10-06-2003 12:27
First, someone on the subway project approached me online to join their group. I'm a neophyte, so I'm still spending time observing and otherwise learning; therefore I'm steering clear of project participation for now. This person insisted that I had to make a decision "right now", which I thought very strange. I cannot see where any SL project would require such a hasty response. When I declined stating my newbie status and that I might reconsider later, the person was very rude, calling me "A-Hole" before bamfing off.
Alas, I cannot recall the person's name. :-\ FWIW, it was on one of the islands near Jessie this past Sunday.
This is just a heads up to the project organizers that they need to better police their constituents. Zealousness and rudeness don't win over converts.
On a more, ahem, constructive note, I've a question regarding the building of underground structures. Specifically, if I buiild a tunnel into a hill side, the terrain is not clipped round the tunnel; instead it "bleeds through". Thus, not only do you still have ground visible, you cannot walk through your tunnel past it.
I've though that maybe I need to insure that the object was closed when pushing it through. Unfortunately experiments have proved that that doesn't work.
Kludgey work-arounds would include lowering the terrain below the water table and building "fake" ground on the top (which, oddly enough, mirrors a RL tunnel building technique), or somehow hiding the terrain and have a script temporarily set PHANTOM_MODE on your avatar as you walk through the terrain.
What do you guys do for your subway? Or is it all above ground?

Piprrr, you're not alone in recieving numerous requests for help with the Jessie subway by a certain over-enthusiastic SL resident. I've been at more than one event in which this individual has interrupted the proceedings to ask for donations, and hasn't accepted No for an answer. I'm sure he'll eventually change his approach out of courtesy to the other SL players.

(Sorry, restraint isn't one of my strongpoints.. ^_^) Ya know, that actually might be who it was; that name does seem familiar. Wow. I'm surprised that I'm not the only one that has been on the receiving end of overly aggressive recruiting.

And to reply to Piprr's other question: you can't actually dig a tunnel in SL. All the caves or tunnels you see in-world are simulated by covering over a trench.

All the caves or tunnels you see in-world are simulated by covering over a trench. Well, that's disappointing. I'm hoping in a future release they allow polygonal cutting, which will allow not only for more complex objects, but for tunneling as well. (Well, they already have a form of "cutting" in that you can hollow out existing objects.) I may try the ole "PHANTOM_MODE"-the-avatar trick to see if that works, at some point; though my intuition is that it won't work. :\
