Is there a way to find objects that have flown?

Is there a way to find objects that have "escaped?" I'm working on scripted objects and a couple, due to errors on my part, have flown straight up! I chased after the second one with my jet pack but couldn't find it. I did find a couple other, non-physical objects from ages ago, though. Is there an upper limit they'll fly to and stick?

Under land controls, 'return objects to owner' will do this. I did this by accident, and got back a flock of five lost swans, which had flown up so high they were unfindable, and over a year old. They were supposed to have been swimming on my moat. Goodness knows how far they had flown in their travels. Some items do seem to have a life of their own!

Best wishes from Ainee Kohime

Unfortunately, the "return objects to owner" option only works if the objects are still somewhere on your land. If they have left your land, they could be anywhere, at any altitude. There's almost no way to retrieve them unless a distant landowner finds and returns them.

If you are building your own physical device (a vehicle, a projectile object, whatever...) the smartest thing is to script it to either llDie or return home if it tries to cross a sim boundary or reaches a specific altitude. That way, if it takes off without you, you don't have to chase it. It's very easy to write those limits into your script, and it's good insurance. Take a look at and .

@ Ainee - If you have wayward swans (ducks, geese, loons ... ) from Animania, catch them before they float totally away and return them to Animania to trade in for an upgrade. Changes in server software can make well-behaved water fowl do goofy things, so Animania updates their products and offers free trade-ins. I have had to do that four times so far with my ducks. :p

ETA: Hah! I see that you asked a similar question in the Scripting Tips forum and got a more complete answer ( ). :D

Sounds like ya might want to go over to the Scripting Forum and ask them how to put in a remote "die" command in the scripts you are working on! ;-) That way if the prim runs away, you can send the command to the script to kill the object before it causes any problems.

Good luck!

I had a scripted monkey wander out of my cafe - twice - even though its range was only supposed to be a few meters. The first time it happened to be noticed by a neighbor browsing his land info for a totally unrelated reason, and he returned it to me. The second time - well, I've not recovered it.

I never found a reliable way to look for it. I tried searching with scripted-object scanners, I tried searching by eye, and there was just no way to track it down. Someone has to notice it and return it to me - which may never happen, as it could be anywhere at any altitude.

Similarly, Bodhi, I don't think there's any reliable way for you to find your wayward objects. :(

I don't have a solution, but this reminds me of one of my favorite threads...

In it, the OP said that he rezzed some object -- a box, I think it was, with some script inside (?). I don't quite remember. In any case, whatever the thing was, according to the OP, it "hauled ass" and shot off his sim, away to parts unknown.

He had some way of knowing where it was... I've tried to find the thread, without success... but anyway, when he'd get to the location, the box would be off somewhere else.

I probably remember it all wrong, but I had the picture of this poor guy, spending all his time in SL chasing this box...

Too bad he didn't blog it all, with pictures. Each post could start with the IM from the box, reporting location.

Thanks for the info. I guess they'll get cleaned up when I clear my lot some time this year if they're still directly above. At least for now I can maybe avoid littering the grid with my experiments

Hey, Madhu, maybe your monkey is off chasing my butterflies! :D

EDIT: I can't believe it. When I went back a few hours ago, the object had fallen back to my building platform. I forgot that I did end the script with a line that would make it stop moving but remain physical. I guess it just took a really long time to come down from wherever it was!

Are you on mainland or private island? I ask because I have an answer for private island.
