Hello,
I keep getting this error message when I go to export my sculpties in Maya:
"Error: Cannot use data of type no type in a scalar operation"
and instead of creating a tga file with the map, it creates a larger copy of the object in the scene.
I'm modeling from a NURBS torus , I've deleted history, frozen and reset Transformations and deleted history again before exporting.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks, -Milla

The duplication issue will happen if you're trying export parented objects. The exporter does not understand heirarchy. Make sure there are no parentings or groupings.
The only information I was able to find on the error message you're seeing is that it can be caused by borked MentalRay nodes in the scene. The simplest fix for it is to work around it by importing the geometry into a new scene. Alternatively, you can delete all Mental Ray nodes from the existing scene, save, and reopen, but there's obviously more margin for error there. Either way, you'll end up losing your MR render settings, so you'll have to recreate them from scratch.
I suspect that that's not really the issue, though, in this case, since the sculpty exporter uses the Maya Software renderer, not Mental Ray. Still, it might be worth trying the suggested work-around.
If you've got no parentings or groupings in the scene, and you don't have Mental Ray loaded, and the problem is still happening, then I'm not sure what to tell you, sorry.

Thank for helping out!
So I tried again today, first by deleting all unused Mental Ray nodes (although I'm using Turtle). I also noticed that the name of SHAPES in the Channel Box was blank, so I renamed it with the same name-matrix I found in my other sculpties, and voila'! it worked!
I tried replacing the SHAPE name with just shape1 and it would not create the sculpt map! Instead I got the larger duplicate again. So it seems that SHAPE name was the culprit. Would that be possible?
