Hey, I'm currently building a really large three story house and I was wondering if there is a way to shut the light out of rooms, so it is pitch black, or at least mostly black, for rooms that have no windows and are completely boxed in? So like the only thing that does show light would be some sort of object with the light feature enabled?

Avoiding your own light sources isn't hard, but blocking out SL's ambient daylight is impossible -- certainly on a room-by-room basis. You can set the sim to midnight, assuming that you own the sim. That will block ambient light everywhere, and you will have to add it back in with selected light sources where you want them.

No, setting the sun to Midnight just replaces sunlight with moonlight. It's dimmer, but there is still an ambient light from the moon. There is no way to block light in SL. Period. Prims do not block light, and neither does terrain, no matter how thick either is. Being deep under water makes it darker, but gives everything a blue tint. And many actions are different underwater. For example, flying becomes swimming... Filling a space with semi-transparent phantom prims can sort of make it look darker, but makes it almost impossible to maneuver a camera or click on anything. And it looks really bad from some angles.

Yeah, you're right, Ceera. Still, you can get it pretty darn dark at midnight inside a closed space. Opaque prims block your view of the moon and stars, so you can get a decent "hide on the closet" feeling. It's not perfect, but it's the only option the OP has, as far as I can see.

Each client has a setting for ambient light level, which can be turned way down. But this only affects what YOU see, not what everyone else sees. The default settings are still like "moonlight bright enough to read a newspaper by". And even if you lock a sim to midnight, anyone can still make it mid-day, or any other time of day, in their client settings.
