Even though I've been building for over a year in SL, I've rarely paid much attention to the "Material" selector, except when setting a prim to 'Light'.
Then it dawned on me... I really had no clue as to the benefit and purpose of the other materials. I searched here on the forums, but couldn't find an answer.
So, do you know what 'Material' does?

Besides light which is... light.. it effects physics and collison sounds. Rubber bounces more for example. it's all pretty simple. I've read it also effect weight but I'm not sure this is true.

So, do you know what 'Material' does? I dunno that there is a lot of difference between, say, steel and wood... but rubber bounces! No, really... So I always assumed it was a physics thing. If you make copies of the same sphere at the same height, set them to different materials, turn them physical and drop them, they behave differently. Edit: And yeah, what Kayin said while I was posting

Material also controls friction. Glass is more slippery. http://secondlife.com/badgeo/wakka.php?wakka=Material

Also if you turn bump mapping of objects on (in your display preferences) you'll see differences in the bump maps of each material. It's primitive to be sure (wood has a standard wood grain bump map but not all woods have the same grain). I'd like to see SL implement uploading of custom bump maps.
