The quick answer is that there are lots of free 3D modeling programs out there that can be used to create sculpted prims.

What you use depends on your needs and ambitions. With Rokuro, you could make a simple lathed shape in about 15 minutes of study. With SculptySpace, an evening will teach you to make nice shapes useful for things like dress parts. Spend a week's worth of evenings, you could learn Wings3D, which is really powerful (I used it to make my first sculpted horses). And at the top of the free program pile is Blender, which is notoriously difficult, but once learned will give you a program that in power rivals Maya and other high end 3D modeling programs.

For tutorials and such, do a search in this forum. You'll find LOTS of great information.
