How to determine footprint?

I know it's probably a very basic thing but I was wondering how to determine the footprint of a home? I've just started making a small house and don't really know how to determine it's footprint.

The most apropriate way - assuming you are intending to sell this build - is to edit land and drag a box on the ground around your build. This will give you the measurements in 4m "chunks" which is what most buyers look for. That is, assuming your customer is trying to build on a 512m^2 plot, they like to know that it will fit onto a 16m by 32m parcel.
If you are looking for slightly less exact measures, I've been using a 10m meterstick with markings every 25, 50, 75, and 100cm. I dropped one on you in game. I has no scripts, it won't steal your money, it's just a stick.

I do most of my building on a platform textured with a 10M grid. Each prim is 10M x 10M, and the texture divides each one into ten marked sections. There are several such textures in SL, or you can easily make your own.
For convenience I keep a 20 x 20 (4 prims) and a 30 x 30 (9 prims) pre-linked platform in inventory. I can also rez these to use as a 'ruler' to measure existing things in world.

Simply select all the prims around the perimeter, and then hold down ctrl-shift. See the numbers at the top center of the screen? That's the size of your selection.

One way I've done this chore is to simply create a small box and move it from corner to corner of the build. I line it up with the corners and note the coords for each corner. B bit of math will then give you the dimensions. You can use this method to get pretty accurate sizes for your builds.

--Wissen Let me save you some math. Instead of just one box, create several, and put one in each corner. Select them all, and then hold ctrl-shift. The precise dimensions of the selection will be written for you at the top of the screen.
