Hi;

Recently we have decided to create an absolute beginners tutorial, because so many people hesitate to at least try out blender due to rumours about complex GUI and non intuitive behaviour ...

So, here it is... The blender beginners tutorial is published.

http://blog.machinimatrix.org/2008/08/24/the-blender-primer/

We are not showing any fancy techniques, or complicated stuff by any means. It only covers the absolute basics, like how to select vertices, move,scale, border select ...
There is absolutely no SL specific topic in this tutorial. So we encourage you to watch the video, then (hopefully) decide to try out blender. If you want to learn more about sculpties with blender, you can watch our subsequent videos (see below).

If you have the feeling, this video is too long, too trivial, or needs other enhancements, or things are missing (definitely there are things missing ... ;-) ), please tell me/us...

BTW: there is also a blender installation guide available on our blog and if you are curious about the rest... we got 9 tutorials at the moment and are happy about every visitor and even more happy about any feedback ;-)

For more informations, see also the thread /8/75/257428/1.html

have fun,
Gaia

Gaia, that video is fantastic!

I can honestly say I've learned more about using Blender in the last 20 minutes by watching that video than I ever did by tinkering with the program on my own, or from trying to make sense of available documentation. I'm getting the sense I probably need to re-evaluate what it really is about Blender that has rubbed me the wrong way for so long. If your video is any indication, it just may be that it's not actually that the interface is so badly designed as I'd always thought, but simply that it's always been badly explained. In short, you're a good teacher, and they're not, and that may be what makes all the difference. If the official manual were set up like your video, it's probable I would never have had any cause for complaint all these years. Thanks so much for putting it together!

I'm still not sure I actually like the interface in comparison with Maya, but at least I'm starting to get somewhat comfortable with it now. I can't wait to see what you come up with next. Thanks again. Keep 'em coming!
