Has anyone come across this? I am making a circular landscape piece... the flowers are small... 0.5M... and are only about 12M apart... and yest SL says I cannot link because they are too far apart. I thought the linking distances was like 30M... not 12... I've linked prefabs way bigger than this...any clue?

Linking distance depends on the size of the prims. The smaller they are, the shorter the allowed link distance. If you really want to link a lot of small objects in a larger area, try placing a larger transparent prim at their geometric center and linking to it. That's what jewelry makers often do when they build a necklace of tiny beads.

Link distance is directly related to object size. It's a bit like gravity. Larger objects can "attract" each other over further distances than small ones can.

For two objects that are each just .5x.5x.5, the max link distance is about 7 meters, if my math is right.

For a complete explanation of the linkability rules, including the mathematical formula you can use to figure out max link distance for any group of objects, see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linkability_Rules

Being a jewelry maker, I'm going to disagree as to the purpose of this larger prim. Since the linkability of prims is never less than 2 meters, there really is no need for a larger prim to increase the linkability sphere. Rather, makers include a larger prim as a an easily identified and selected base prim that can always be used to keep the fitment constant during construction an wearing (in modifiable objects).

Thanks. :) I always assumed that the link distance was a major factor for jewelers. I should have realized, though, that you put an invisible root prim there for the same reason I use one when I make prim skirts. It makes fitting a whole lot easier.

ahh... 3 years and I never knew that. Thank you I will keep that in mind for future builds.
