After a year-long hiatus from using Wings 3D I tried making what I thought was a fairly simple sculpty the other day. It was the body for a kind of squat bird, nothing fancy. I made it with the 16x15 settings. When I tested it out on the beta grid it wasn't smooth but was actually faceted. :( While all I made last year with Wings were some rocks, they at least came out smoothed. I can't figure out what if anything I'm doing differently. Is there something obvious I'm missing from lack of practice or am I mis-remembering how I made the rocks?

A sculpty uses a 32x33 mesh so you've effectively halved the amount of faces by doubling up on the vertices.

Subdivide it once before you convert.

Bodhisatva, I think Ponk must not be familiar with making sculpties in Wings, since there is no subdivision operator in Wings that will allow the resulting model to be exported.

It sounds to me like your problem is that you forgot to check the "lossless compression" option. If that isn't it, post a picture of your sculpty in SL so I can better understand what you got.

True enough I don't know about wings :o

So if you can't subdivide, then begin with a 32x33 mesh.

Nothing wrong with bacon!

Thanks for all the replies. As soon as I can get back to that 'puter I'll give these suggetions a try. Spent some time last night looking for subdivide and wanted to be thorough before I came here and asked where it was. I deal with enough people who would ask "which one is the 'any' key" to try not to look like that myself. :D

In Wings, subdivision is done with the Smooth command. But if you use Smooth, you won't be able to export the result as a sculpty, just because the exporter isn't smart enough to convert the result into the required sculpty format.

The "lossless compression" checkbox did help quite a bit but I can see where doing a larger texture in the first place would help. I don't love Wings as it seems a bit tedious but maybe I'll start discovering other tools and settings in it to make sculpting more productive.

Thanks again for your assistance!

i guess people obviously forgot about omei's provided meshes.

assuming anything when you made your sculpty you probably used the the 16x15 sphere mesh instead of the standard 32x31 mesh. anything under this mesh example as i said the 16x15 will be faceted no matter what you do. i personally use the smaller 16x15 for making realistic gems and stuff. very handy when you don't want to take the time to make a facet for a diamond when its already set up for you to just flatten it out and such. but anyway when making high res sculptys in wings always use the 32x31 sphere quad or tri, or the 64x63 sphere quad/tri i really recommend you use quads as they are easier to work with.
