Hi folks,

I've been playing around with the creation tools, and I'm starting to get the hang of the basics. I had a few questions:

Can you cut a section out of an object? I was trying to make a doorway in a 10x10 wall, and couldn't figure a way to do it without using 3 rectangles. I finally hollowed out a big square hole, and shoved the bottom through the floor...but I know that's not the proper way.

Can you mold a shape...like putting dimples on a sphere to make a golf ball? I tried Amorphium once, and they had all sorts of ways of poking and pulling the object like it was clay.

As always, thanks in advance,

Cuff

I dont think you can do what your asking, but I learn something new all the time still, maybe someone has some tricks to share.

One thing that struck me about your post, you said,

"...but I know that's not the proper way."

I wonder, did it work? What is improper about doing something a certain way? Be creative, if it works, go with it.

the shaping in second life only supports the specifications of openGL. this IS a feature; but it can also be a bit frustrating when trying to produce an advanced shape. remember though that what you're producing is a visual effect, not a physical entity. using multiple prims and alpha textures can often produce what you're looking for when people look at it.

look. that's a funny word. look look look look ha ha ha

Cuff, you can't cut an arbitrary section out of an object. You can cut a wedge using the "Begin Cut" and "End Cut" parameters, but not a square section like you're asking.

As for dimpling a sphere to make it look like a golf ball, no, you can't do that either. You might try setting a bump map, using the Texture tab. That might simulate the effect you're looking for.

Is there somewhere I can read an abstract or summary of the OpenGL spec?
