Hollowing question

If I have several objects piled and linked and then try to hollow them, will the entire linked object be hollowed out? Or just one individual prim? Does anyone have any tips for this kind of thing?

Also, if I have a prim that has been copied 5 times on my lot, does it count as one prim or 5? (in terms of maximum number of prims on a lot)

expect to hear alot from me here... i have tons of building questions. I might shut up if I'm offered cash though.

tks again.

Each prim is counted towards your prim limit. So if you make 25 copies of it, you will use 26 prims total (original + 25 copies).
If your object consists of 32 prims and you copy it 4 times then you've used 160 prims (your original + 4 copies).

Rats would take at least 14 prims each:
1 head (face textured)
2 ears
4 whiskers
1 body
2 legs
2 forlegs
2 tail (jointed)

:D

just had to tease you. :)

I don't think you can, and if the items are linked it may do funky things to them. depending on how they are linked together, etc.

Changing the hollow number in the edit window in a bunch of linked prims will only change the hollow of one of the prims, if what I remember is correct.

Changes made in the edit window only effect the root prim of a link, or the last object added to a selection of unlinked objects.

Of course, changing the position or rotation of the root prim of a link will move all the other prims as well, but that's more of a side effect.

This brings me to a feature request I've been meaning to make for some time now. I'd like to be able to flip a toggle so that a change made to, to use your example, the hollow setting when a group of unlinked prims are selected, would apply that change to ALL ove the objects. The would be SUCH a timesaver. I think I'll gost start a thread in the Feature REquests forum for this right now...

Yeah that would be great... i can see its going to be sort of a hassle making anything with a lot of prims if you can't make changes to entire grouped object at once. Illustrator works this way and it's super. I'm seeing alot of similarities actually between the program in SL and adobe software. But then I'm dissapointed when it doesn't work exactly the same way...

But SL has naked people and Illustrator doesn't so thats a plus in SL's favour.

Tiger Crossing has already admirably answered your question regarding hollowing very well, but I wanted to mention that hollowing the root prim in a linked set often crashes my client (or at least it might, things seem more stable since the last time I did this), and I have had the honor of crashing an entire sim a few times hollowing several linked tetrahedrons, and linked cubes.

I too like Tiger's feature suggestion of having all selected prims become hollow when you adjust the hollow setting.

Until 1.5 comes along, many of your building questions can be answered in The Ivory Tower Library of Primitives located in Noyo (Noyo 160, 160 is easy to remember, but the exact coords are given below in my signature). From my brief look at the 1.5 preview last night, I can tell I have a lot of updating to do, as well as add an entirely new module for the ring shape. Whew! I was amazed at what can be done with the sphere, torus, tube and ring!
