Hi,
I was wondering if there's a possibility to build items off-line. Just build something, adding textures, adding scripts, testing the builded item in some kind of off-line program and if everything seems ok uploading it to sl and test it inworld.

It is possible.

Look at the OpenSim website here:

http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Main_Page

Several people have made Standalone Grids possible on your own computer. The easiest one I've found so far is Tribal Net found here:

http://tribalnet.se/

I had a standalone grid up and running in less then ten minutes using their viewer and it runs flawlessly... except for scripting.

It also works with Second Inventory which you can find here:

http://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=612924

Which means that anything you build "offline" in TribalNet can be easily imported into SL.

There is OSGrid as well, which I think has better scripting capabilites but which is more difficult to get running IMHO. With Tribalnet it was download/install/Click button.. voila!, Standalone Grid.

Of course, you can always just make an secret building alt and avoid all the hassle :)

There's also this, but it works with a U.S. $2000 software program (3ds Max), so it will only appeal to the professional graphic artist.

Why not use Blender or whatever prog you are comfortable with if its sculpties, then upload to the Beta Grid to do the scripting/testing? It doesn't cost any actual L$.
If it's just prims you could either use prim.blender offworld or again just go on the Beta Grid and build and take note of the finished sizes/attributes for reconstructing in SL.

I've read of someone else using that setup but have been lazy getting it setup myself. Second Inventory is cool, but it's for one pc only... which is an issue, since I want to do offline building on my notebook using a standalone grid, but use my desktop to connect to the real grid.

Yep, found out about that point out after buying 2inventory... lol.
I've tried the set-up (tribalnet) above but the problem is you always need a i-connection.
Now i'm working with a off-line set-up of opensim with the hippoviewer, works great, just one minnor point: this is just a basic program, but it works great if you want to create (build) some furniture or what ever.
