Problem with creating original objects

I have created a number of pieces of furniture and have run into some problems where I'm pretty sure that I'm just not doing things in the correct order. What I want to do is create something that I could sell for 1$ L, but also so that I could give it away to people that I know for free.

What has happened is that I can't transfer the items that I've created and I'm not sure why. Most of my items consist of about 3 or 4 prims. My questions are:

1. Do the permission settings on each individual prim that make up an object matter? What is the best way to set them? What if I locked them so they would not move while linking them - will this affect someone's ability to modify the items at a later date?

2. Does the order that I'm linking the objects have anything to do with it? Any recommendations for the best order for linking things?

3. What does "Original", "Copy" mean? Should I select "Original" when I first create the item?

4. What is the best way to set the permissions so that I can give someone a gift that I have created from my inventory, but still sell it for 1$ somewhere else?

5. Do the permission settings on the texture used matter? If they are set no transfer, could that be the problem? (I set them this way on some textures, but now I can't seem to get them unset.)

6. How do you change permissions on your own creations once you have screwed them all up?

Which seems to be what I have done.

Apologies in advance for asking something that's probably documented that I just have not looked hard enough for.

My appreciation to anyone that has any suggestions.

Hiya Rose! Hope I can help.....

1) Not to my knowledge.....I don't usually set permissions til the object is complete. And I do believe locking them will affect what the next person can do, depending on the permissions you set.

2) Again, not to my knowledge......but keep in mind the last object you select when linking will be the parent prim....where rotation is based, etc. I usually try to keep the parent prim somewhere around the middle of the object.

3) Original and Copy are used only for selling the object.....and unless you are selling something one of a kind, always set to copy, otherwise, you'll lose the one you put out.

4) Permissions are kinda tricky, and it's usually dependent on the person how they set it. I, for example, set almost everything I sell and give to my friends to mod/copy/no transfer. This way, if people want to have more than one of the item or want to change it, they can....but they cannot give it to anyone else. To me, this is a safeguard that the things I make won't end up for sale somewhere else at higher prices.

5) Here is where your problem lies I believe......a texture that you use on something you are going to sell must have full permissions (copy/mod/transfer). The textures used will affect the permissions of the final object. IMHO, any good texture retailer here will sell their textures with full permissions because anything else is basically useless.

6) You should always be able to change the permissions on something you created, unless the texture or something inside the object has no mod privlidge.

Hope that all made sense...IM me inworld if you need anything else! :)

From reading your post, I can see two things that I'm doing wrong. One is that I'm using original instead of copy and the other is that I set some textures that I uploaded to no copy, no transfer and these two things have probably caused a problem. (This is probably what is not allowing me to give something to someone out of my inventory).

There is probably no way that I can change that, short of unlinking, changing the permissions on the texture, retexturing the object and then then relinking.

If anyone knows of an easier way, I would love to hear it.

Thanks so much for your help.

There is a bug with textures that I have found. If you apply a texture to an object, that is no copy/transfer it will make the whole object no transfer and you will not be able to modify the permissions on the object. Even if you remove the texture from the object, the problem remains. When I did this I was not using a texture made by me but by someone else, that was set no copy/no transfer. There was no way of getting around it apart from either remaking the object without using the texture, or calling a linden and getting them to reset permissions.
