I would suggest you take a look at PrimComposer (http://liferain.com/downloads/primcomposer/).
It's a free plugin for 3ds Max that will make creating sculpted prims so much easier you'll be amazed. While the tutorial you are following can work, it's pretty old and was written (and appreciated, thanks Chip!) when sculpted prims were first introduced and there weren't any tools available for Max users. I can't even imagine going through a manual process like the one in the tutorial now that I know of better methods. . _____________________

I have downloaded that and have started going through the tutorial videos, thank you. However, one of the things I'm trying to accomplish is to project a map of an already created object (specifically the torso and other body parts of the SL avatar) for upload as a sculpted prim (at least w/o rebuilding it from scratch). Is this possible w/prim composer? The only place I've seen that one could purchase them is quite expensive.
