the primary advantage is that a group can own more land for less allocation than an individual. another nice thing is that everyone in the group shares the dwell generated on the land.
groups need allocation to purchase land just like we do. when we want to buy land, we must pay for alloacation by tiering up. a group gets its allocation from members that donate from their individual accounts.
allocation donated to a group is increased by ten percent. every 100 square meters (sm) of allocation i donate equals 110sm that the group can own. it also helps that other members of my group can donate some of their allocation into the same pool. we share the burden and also share the dwell.
the downside is that any officer of the group can do anything to the land inclluding selling it or changing the settings. so only only only ever ever ever deed land to a group if you never want it back and you trust the group officers explicitly

If land is set to one's group, can any member in that group create and build on it? (Not deeded to the group, just set to the group.)

From: someone Originally posted by Khamon Fate allocation donated to a group is increased by ten percent. every 100 square meters (sm) of allocation i donate equals 110sm that the group can own. One minor nit-picky point I noticed the other day. The 10% bonus is correct, but it works slightly differently than this. It's more like a 10% refund. For instance, If I give 4000m of my land allocation to the group, the group gets its 4000, but it only costs me 3600. (Note that this is what I saw when I deeded land to a group. I deeded 3608m to the group and checked off the box to also contribute allotment for the donated land. Apparently, when you do this, the system calculates, using the 10% refund, exactly how much of your allotment must be given in order to give the group EXACTLY what it needs to hold the land you donate. So, in my case, I got a 360m "refund."
