Gonna share a trick shown to me by Ananda Sandgrain. Please understand, I SUCK at building. Big time. But this trick actually let me build some interesting stuff.
This is going to assume you're shoving block prims inside a column in an ascending spiral.
Make a cylinder. Shove the bottom step into it. Link these two prims, making the last thing you link in the cylinder. This is your axis.
Shift-drag one of it's position arrows to create a copy. Then push Ctrl+Z. This should make the 'copy' (which is the thing you're dragging around, which is ACTUALLY the original) back into position.
Lift and rotate that object. Then copy, shift+z, lift and rotate. If you life and rotate by numbers, you should get an mathematically exact rotation every time.
Now you've just gotta go back and delete all those copied cylinders, till you have one or none left.

From: someone Originally posted by Bopete Yossarian ok, I've tried and haven't been able to figure out how to make spiral stairs. Any hints would be much appreciated. I've got a couple or four methods to show if you'd like (including an especially elegant one I learned from Higbee Protagonist that creates a sort of tight, spiral ramp)...IM me in world and I'll give you a demo. Spiral ramps are easier on a sim, and easier to make, too. I've got one wrapped around a bubble tube at the TigerTor Apartments in NW Miramare. Each segment is a quarter of a turn. Stack them 90 degrees to each other, and you have a curved ramp. I can post some exact numbers later.

I have a spiral staircase builder built by Law murphy back in beta. It's yours for no charge I'll stick it out in Venice tonight. You just add you step design - make a few variable changes and wala instant staircase.
