Hiya I have a small island, where the land is pre-textured as greenery and rock, but I would like to make a small part of the shoreline into a sandy cove. Does anyone happen to know whether land can be re-textured to create a beach, and if so how ? I've seen a fair few beaches around SL.... Alternatively, is there perhaps a method of superimposing a sand texture in some fashion ? Any suggestions gratefully received, thanks

AFAIK, you have the textures to do what you want to do in your Lbrary part of your Inventory... up at the top...
Unfortunately, you'll have to apply that to prims and shape them yourself rather than just apply them to the ground... Applying them to the ground directly is reserved for private sim/island owners at this point in time I believe.
Good luck.... I have done that sort of thing before. It takes time and patience to get the effect you want sometimes, but it is quite doable.

Thanks Korg, I'll try that, it's about time I started honing some prim sculpting skills, so I'll put on my perseverance hat and have a go....

Did the same with a couple of small islands recently. Best prim to use for that seems to be a flattened torus.

That's a useful tip Dallas - I did try something similar by burying a rectangular prim once, but it just looked embarassingly fake. Of course, the flat torus will have rounded off edges and a natural curve, I guess some of the diameter can be cut out to leave an arc, then that fitted snugly into the curve of the land formation - hmmmm, got to try this when I log in.....thanks

unless you're in one of the original core sims, on the north west side of the mainland, you won't have much land edit range. however, if you have a strip of land close to the water line, you can probably edit it into a beach:
select a strip of land under the water and a couple of adjacent strips over dry ground;
raise and flatten the whole thing so that it's just above the water;
reselect those three strips with an additional couple of strips of dry land;
smooth the entire selection to create a beach front that eventually slopes gently into the higher ground of the island.
always raise land higher than you need it and flatten it a bit (not necessarily flat flat). the sloping tool almost always lowers land a notch in addition to smoothing the edges.

Dee,
Khamon's advice is pretty close to what I have done in the past and it works pretty well.
If you wanna see how my beach looks, take a look at Maui 190,131

Had forgotten all about this - been too busy for the beach, lol.
I'll call by and take a look Tito - I was over in Maui at Willow's old place a while ago, and she had a nice beach there, which brought this to mind....
Thanks for the advice by the way Khamon - I have one part of my island where I have left it at a gentle-ish slope, should be a suitable candidate for conversion into a beach.
