How do I cut out a window and then make that cutout part glass? Is it possible to have several panes on one prim?
Thanks.

two methods:
Best, usually, is to build the wall like stacked building blocks, of multiple prims. On rare occasions you can use the Hollow function, if all you need is one opening in a prim wall, with the exact same proportions as the wall and the opening centered in the wall. But more often you build it up as a lower wall (full width), the piece to the left of the window, the window, the piece to the right of the window, and the top part of the wall (full width). So 5 pieces for the wall. Use a 24-bit texture on the wall pieces, and a 32-bit texture on the window prim, so the window prim can have a franme and see-through glass.
You can also use a 32-bit texture on the entire wall, one that shows a wall with a window already in it. This uses only one prim per 10M length of wall, BUT, it has much more trouble with the Alpha Sorting Glitch. See the texture Tips forum and the sticky topic on alpga textures for details.
You can not pierce a prim at a random location, nor can you make multiple openings in a prim, The only possibility that way is a single hollow on the Z-axis, proportional to the prim itself.

I need to make a simple window, but I do not know how to use that hollow function you mentioned in your post. Do you have a moment to explain it to me? Thank you very much!

In the edit window, one of the factors that you can control for any prim is the % Hollow, between zero and 95%. A non-zero value will open a hole on the vertical axis, that has the same default shape as the prim, and is centered on the top face.
So make a box prim, and make it as wide in one direction as you want the wall to be wide, and as wide in the other direction as you want the wall to be tall, and as tall as you want the wall to be thick. Change the Hollow value to 50%. Rotate the wall prim so it is standing upright, and move it up so it isn't half-burried in the wall. There you have a very simple wall, using a hollow in the prim.

It didn't work. I'm very new and do not quite understand. I changed the hollow ratio to 50%, and it split my wall into 3 sections but nothing was hollow. Can you break it down simpler? Thanks.

many windows are only textures on a basic building prim

rez a cube prim, in the edit window make the dimensions of the prim x = 5.0, y = 5.0, z = 0.1, in the hollow type 50% a hole appears in the prim from top to bottom, rotate prim 90 degrees. now you have a wall with a window.
make changes to sizes and hollow to suit your purpose, that's the most simple type of window.
I may send some cut prims your way when I am in world for you to have examples.
