How "high" is second life? How "high" is my property?

I just had a small plot of land given to me in a land for the landless bid. (Thank you Char Linden!)

This plot of two dimensional land is sitting within a three dimensional simulation.

-How far up does this deed go?
-When do I hit Linden airspace?
-How high does the simulation go and what happens when I hit the ceiling?

;) If I do hit the ceiling, will my avatar black out from lack of virtual oxygen?
 If so, does this log me out, or does my avatar come crashing back to virtual Earth?

Thank you folks.

All the way.

There is no such thing really.

You can generally have objects up to 768m. Physical objects and objects that move with scripts may have a lower limit. There's no known limit to how high avatars can go with scripted help. Some of us have been literally miles and miles up, well into the official real world definition of space. Try it if you get a chance; it's a strange world but you don't need a space suit. It's not even particularly chilly. :)

Very good questions, Tinker. :)

By owning the land, you control the airspace above it. Although you can only build to 768m, there's no ceiling to the simulator that I'm aware of.

Does this mean we own the stars above our little patch of land too? Hmm. :)

Hmmm... How big a plot of land do you need to own the WHOLE moon at midnight? :)

Unattached objects get instantly deleted at 4k and up... But there's not a lot you can 'do' at altitudes of 768m and up. Gravity acatually increases at higher altitudes. Some people have put platforms at 2k and above, but you can get pulled through the platform by gravity there. I've been to over 1,600,000m up before I crashed... I would assume some people have been higher.

I'm guessing that altitude is really just a double value somewhere. If there is no explicit bounds checking I'd assume the limits of double would 'bound' us. You'd have to go to 10^11 to lose 10^-4 meter resolution. I'm not sure if the engine breaks or you just stop moving or nothng happens at that point, but it is higher than you'll ever probably go. There are most likely ways, but I've never been able to acheive more than an avg vertical speed of 130m/s. At that rate it would take 35 days to reach a distance equivalent to the RL moon, and that's only a magnitude of 4x10^8m.

Altitude could be stored as a long double, and then we're in the realm of silliness to try and break it without moving at an exceptionally higher speed.

Of course I could be totally wrong and maybe getting enough altitude causes you to get moved into the Lindens email server and you can read all their messages. :)

The edit dialog lets you place objects as high as 768m. llSetPos is capped at 512m.

Avatar banning and "no outside script" options only extend up to ... what, 40 meters above the terrain? Note that it definitely is above the terrain .. if you build a flying castle high in the sky, you won't be able to keep folks out of it with the ban tools.

Your ownership of "prim space" is indefinitely high; but control of "avatar space" goes up maybe only to 40 meters.

why build one, just visit the Gardner Castle in the sky in Solang :D or hold an event there even.

actually, you don't even get 40 meters of owned bannable space. it's more like 10-15. i imagine this is to keep our skies navagable.

also, extreme heights are a good way to watch your entire avatar start freaking out and try to explode. :)

how do you fly that high?
after I get up to a certian height I cant fly up any further.

I know that there are houses that are higher than that. how does one get that high?
Just a teleport or platform that flys up

what is the limit of height when just flying up?

There are several different relevant altitudes in SL:
  1. Minimum height, below which objects get returned (~7m)
  2. Water level (different)
  3. No-script / restricted land ends above a certian height (~40-50m?)
  4. Your avatar can hover unassisted up to a certian height (land height + 50m)
  5. Your avatar can fly up to a maximum certian height (~200m)
  6. The highest you can llSetPos() to (512m)
  7. The highest you can build non-physics objects (768m)
  8. The highest a physics object can go before being returned (~4096m?)

Are you sure about this? A few months back I tried burying an object at around 1m. I don't think I ever saw it get returned.

A few corrections on this:
  1. No-script/restrictions: 15m above the ground. For deep water, this can mean the restricted zone doesn't extend to the surface
  2. Cloud level: 200m to 250m
  3. Unassisted flight: 150m above ground level, I think
