What is a building grid? Is this something I already have available to me, or something I need to acquire?

I can see the ruler on my screen when I build, but it's only visible when I start to move a prim around. I've been reading building tips and I’ve seen mention of a building grid, but I'm not sure what it is?

I've seen that term applied to a workspace or sandbox with a big (10x10 or 20x20) platform marked off in a grid.

I was just looking in Xstreet and seems that's exactly what it is, a square marked up as a grid and it's free too :)

There are several textures that builders have made - essentially graph paper for guiding in-world prim placement and alignment. Most of them are available for free.

Carl Metropolitan made one of the most widely used ones, to my knowledge. It's white, with a black 1 M grid, and has a series of grey concentric circles in the center.

There are also grids designed specifically for texture alignment, and specific for texturing sculpted prims. Look in the texture forums for the term "grid" and you should find most of them.

From the way you wrote this, just in case, that ruler you see when you move a prim, if you
make sure your cursor is above that you can move your prim in precise increments. Determined
by the number you set in the "options" button near the top area of the "edit" panel.
It makes Much easier to set your initial prims to build in accordance with the world "grid".
Which you can also set which type in the edit panel.
