256 for non-physical, 32 for physical.

For non-physical, yes the maximum is 256 but it also depends on a combination of both prim size and distances. You may end up limited to much less then the high mark. Unfortunately it is a rather complicated formula that is used server side and hence ends up being a matter of trial and error. If you can't get everything linked that you want into your set, you have to try selecting a different root prim sometimes.

Generally, it's not a hard process to get most groupings of prims linked, up to and including groups of 256. You just need to keep a rough idea of the linkability sphere in your head, and make sure everything fits it as you work. It's not often that I've had problems making that happen, but yes, the order of linking will sometimes make a difference.

also for vehicles every avatar sitting, counts as a prim, so it is actually a lot lower, if you want to be able to sit in your 32 primset vehicle.

So, for a piece of jewelry using around 150 microprims, it shouldn't be a problem to link it. I have never had a problem before but this is the most prims i've tried in a piece. However, I am unable to link them for some reason. Am I doing something wrong? (sorry math is not my strong suit.)

Linking 150 prims shouldn't be a problem. However, if they are all very small, then the distance at which they can link to each other will also be small. Link distance is kind of like gravity. Larger objects can "attract" each other over larger distances. Smaller objects need to be closer together before they can affect one another.

Your post didn't specify whether you were actually having trouble linking your 150 prims, or whether you were just asking theoretically whether it should work. Are you actually having trouble? If so, try linking all the little prims to a larger invisible one.
