Coming from Activeworlds (AW) to SecondLife (SL), it seems that structures such as castles, dungeons, and other medieval buildings are fairly commonplace. In AW, if one wanted to build a dungeon, situated below ground, in a castle's basement, one merely made a hole in the terrain and placed some type of doorway in its place. Admittedly, I am quite new to SL, but I have, as yet, not seen a way to poke a hole in the ground in SL. Is there a way to do any building underground? At first I had thought I would simply raise the terrain around the perimeter of the proposed dungeon, and sink the land within the dungeon's walls, but the raise / lower limit for terrain doesn't seem sufficient to allow for a dungeon with realistically sized ceilings. Any hints? Thank you, in advance.

It may depend on your sim, I don't know. I was able to do exactly what you described above and had a pretty deep dungeon under my pyramid.

There is land you can terraform like that.

However, it'll be a bit kludgy and won't look that great.

Yea I'll have to admit I really liked building underground in AW... I have an entire cavern network over at my city (Nexxus City, AW 285s 5000w if you ever want to see)

Basements, caves, dungeons used to be fairly common in SL. This was before the height taxes were lifted and terraforming limits were tightened. Before we could freely build in the sky, basements were the only places for any sort of privacy.

Most of the world is now limited to 4m variance in terraforming, so it is tougher than it used to be, but you can still make caves. The oldest part of the world, roughly between Tehama and Shipley and Varney and Ritch still allow terraforming between 20m - 40m variance, so its easier there. 4m is doable, if you start on a fairly flat piece of land.

I have a 4m cave in Penrith your welcome to visit and see how it was made. I lowered the ground to form the hole and covered it with a terrain textured roof. The attached pic is not that great so drop in and take a look, Penrith 10,50.

Thanks to all for the replies. I shall gather up my ho, er... um... I mean my hoe, and start building me a dungeon! ;)
