Tips for Building things at great heights....

I'm interested in adding a cloudworld to my property, but would like to get some tips from those of you who have experience constructing items at great heights. I'm concerned specifically about controlling prims whilst not having my avatar keep falling down slowly... among other things.

I've never undertaken any high-altitude building. Do I have to worry about prims shifting or any other anomalous behavior?

rez a square prim, sit on it, and then edit the prim (while you're on it), setting the Z coord to your desired build height. This will keep you from drifting downward while building.

The biggest problem is the fact that there is no ground on which to build. That makes it hard to rez prims in thin air. What I do is make a floor from 10X10 pannels link them and raise them (using the Z box) to the level I want to build, this basically creates a false ground which you can walk around on and edit from. Editing from a prim is great for smaller simple projects that just happen to be in the air, but prims are annoying to move around as needed to construct larger structures. When done with your construction simply take the floor or delete it.

you can use a hovercraft of some sort as well

Or that crazy X-flight script thing. It should keep you hovering at most heights, I think?

Mmmhmmm! Yes :), the Carbon Rod... SuezanneC Baskerville first gave it to me, and so I must thank her for introducing it to my virtual life.

It has a hover-on mode, and you can fly unassisted to great heights, and hover there in place.

As you don't have landscape to consider, if possible I would build it closer to the ground and link it together in one or more sets. Just create a decent size platform, and use Snap To Grid as much as possible. You're not really gaining a great deal by trying to build it in position, and you're less likely to accidentally stray over your land boundary low down where you can see the property lines. Then a quick edit of the Z value for those sets to flip the pieces into position high above you.

Don't forget also that you can select multiple linked sections and Take Copy it all into your inventory as one big lump. Then rez it all at once somewhere else.

For completeness, the limits:

Build tools don't work above 768m.
Objects cease to exist if not attached above 4096.
You can't set your home position higher than 256.
