I've tried to make a torus piece which belongs on the elbow. Using both upper arm and forearm attachment types makes the thing fly off to the side when the av moves its arms. I really DONT want to use forearm for it because I have another piece in mind for that area, and I would like them to behave as joints when the arm bends.

Yeah..... The problem is that you may adjust the attachment so that it LOOKS as if it's attached at the elbow, but it still really going to be fixed at its attachment point. If you elbow moves relative to the attachment point, so will your torus attachment. I was reminded of that last night when I went to a party with a parrot sitting on my shoulder. It was fine as long as I didn't move, but once I started dancing, the parrot would swing around the attachment point on my left pec instead of staying on my shoulder. It's very disconcerting to watch a parrot doing a drunken dance around your head. Maybe the solution is to create a much larger attachment to link to the elbow piece. Make the larger part transparent, attach the whole thing to your upper arm, and adjust it so the visible torus piece is at your elbow. I haven't tried this, of course, but it might work. EDIT: WHOA! It does work! I just got curious and tried it .... an invisible cylinder linked to a visible torus and attached to my upper left arm. The torus stays put at my elbow even when I'm doing the wildest dance. Geez, it's nice when a crazy idea actually works. Now I'll have to tell my parrot.

Why would an elbow move relative to the upper arm? Regardless how I move my upper arm, my elbow is always right there at the end of it, the same distance and direction relative to the center of my humerus. The same argument applies to forearm. The shoulder parrot example isn't relevant, because we don't have a "shoulder" attachment point -- you have to use some other body part, and the shoulder moves indepedently. So, I don't understand why the OP's problem happens. I can attach something to my forearm and adjust it to be at my wrist, and it stays at my wrist. Why should the other end, the elbow, be any different? Of course, if you try to adjust the attachment to past the end of the part it's attached to, all bets are off -- the attachment stays fixed relative to the attachment point and nothing else. Rolig, did you try simply attaching the torus to upper arm without the other prim? It should work the same way, and it won't help your parrot.

Actually a drunken parrot sounds apropos I cant explain why it happened. I centered the torus on the middle of the elbow, then when I released the prim and the av bent the elbow to put its hands on the hips, the stupid thing was wayy back there. Whether from upper arm or forearm it shoould still line up. My main av has an attachment on the upper arm and it doesnt swing around at all. Mind you I checked from all angles when positioning it.

Hmmmm... Good points. And I thought I was so smart. Dang! I guess I'll have to put my parrot back in his cage until I figure out a better solution. Meanwhile, I don't know why the OP is having an elbow problem either.

The closest you'll find to a stable point for attaching a shoulder-mounted attachment is either the Chest or the Spine attachment points. Everything else will shift as you move. Chest is the most stable, but also the default for virtually all collars and necklaces.
