hi there, i bought last week an item on sl and saw something strange ( well strange for me ): one part of the item had a prim that looks like a normal box ( 1x1x1). when i look in edit i see it shows up like a 10x10x10 prim with taper both at 1. the other funny thing: it is linked with a sculptie prim and the root prim is around 19 meters from the sculptie prim away. i mean that funny small box with the 10x10x10 size is the root prim. my questions now: how can you link 2 prims that are almost 20 meters away from each other ????? how can you build a 10x10x10 box that looks just like a 1x1x1 box ? would be nice if anyone could help me with that. ty

I haven't ever tried to do it on purpose, but my first guess is that somebody linked a sculpty to a megaprim and then screwed with the megaprim's dimensions, making it pop back to "normal" size. I don't know that the system would still remember that the two prims are supposed to be linked, but it might.

You can torture a prim by changing the prim type to something else like a sphere and being dimpled and so on. You can crush most prims down to small proportions like this, and in some cases you can make them do all sorts of weird, buggy things. I have to say that I've never seen what you're talking about though.
edit - I realised what it is - it's just a sculpty, you can make almost anything any size and any place within the bounding box, they probably did it to increase the LOD, but it's a bit overkill for a cube.

my guess is they did it to get over linking distance limits. as the linking size is supposedly variable with the size of the objects, making that root a 10M cube, even if it looks like a 1m will increase the link distance to the full distance

Maybe, but the link distance would be the same if the small cube was in the middle of the bounding box. If it was off in the corner or to the end then I'd have to agree. Don't know either way, but it's clever building if it is.
