Recently I took down my range of low prim newbie houses (and other items) from around the world to protest the rampant 'freebie resale' kick was going on.

The response and feedback both directly, and indirectly from that event has been very encouraging...

Originally I'd planned to take it all down for a month, and see how things went. Now as I'm rapidly approaching that time, I thought I'd ask anyone out there who uses/has used/modified/owned any of those houses (built by anyone) what their general experience with it was, and if it was at all helpfull to them. Possibly what could be done to improve them.

Even just a 'yep, got one, it sucked/was good' would be cool.

Again - built by anyone... for my part I built:

The Glasshouse
17 prim A Frame
27 prim Beachhouse
33(4?) Prim 'Tudor cottage'

All were for sale for a dollar.

Siggy.

Siggy.....I love your work.....those houses are a wonderful start for anyone who isn't the 'builder'.

For all I can say...this reselling stuff hing is a pain....I seem to have been luckily bypassed by this trend...probably cuz trying to resell a friggin banana plant isn't very sensible...

Make em available...I rather see a few well built houses by you...then some awful monstrosities poping up (k...they'll pop up nonehteless...but hopefully less)

The tudor house is awesome. Even though I built a big castle I wanted a small cottage for the garden. I figured " hey for a buck can't go wrong" and it was only temporary because I was going to build my own little cottage .

Well 2 months later the Tudor cottage is still up and its staying....its just perfect for the garden and it was built very well and detailed..

I also liked the fact that you included the textures with the cottage in case someone wanted to add on to it and keep the same feel.

Interestingly enough, just the other day I ran into a n00b who'd gotten her hands on one of my old avatar fuego's. :) Since I'd always given them out for free, I was relieved to hear she'd gotten it for free as well. SL needs freebies! ^_^ It goes along with SLers most basic needs:

1. Housing
2. Spontaneous Combustion
3. Pretzels

See? :) Maybe LL could buy some little freebies off of designers, and put together a new toy package for n00bs :) Free stuff could generate new customers too ^_^

Siggy, sorry to say but it doth appear that quiet protests don't work and you are only depriving legitimate users of your fantastic builds in order to spite the opportunistic reselling scum. Sigh. Even the texture merchants are complaining that the permissions system is insufficient to protect their sales and it is not likely to be changed any time soon.

If you recall, I had a peaceable protest that intentionally violated the CS, asked people to show support by buying a L$1 useless plywood cube (of which many were sold), was visited by Lindens and had a huge thread of discussion associated with it. Net effect: nada. Removing your wares from the market is not going to generate much notice, even though you are N times more cool than me.

Garth put it up in Grignano for our sales office, modified of course. He is a great builder, but we liked the style so much we put it on the Cowell sales lot first and it is now in The City.

Great design Siggy!

Here's an idea.

Put a script in the houses you sell, that's not modable.

Make it so upon rezzing the house it says who created it and if that person bought it fro msomeone else to report it?

Some good feedback - and I'm currently trying to put together a feature list of worthwhile changes to improve the line.

With 1.4 pretty much on the way, and several of these were built under 1.2 -- it's about time for an upgrade.

Malachi :
I am only N times cooler when N == 0. A while ago you and I had a discussion about the various merits of this project.. As per usual everything you said came to pass, whereas nothing I said did :) I guess some lessons you need to learn yourself, the hard way hehe.

Success - Failure - purely subjective concepts... what some would call a failure I'd call a success.

Part of the reason for taking them down was to see if there WAS any legitimate users left out there -- by putting a dollar price on them I was able to track numbers.. when you have over 900 or so houses out there you have to think that just about everyone who needs one, has one.

In this I was also wrong (but its ok, I'm getting used to it).

More than 50 people contacted me so I could personally hand them a copy of several of them.

Members of the group HAVE had some great discussions with some of the Lindens, and the response has been positive -- permissions ARE going to change... not immediately, but the powers that be know about the problems, and are working on solutions (that I am not privy to :)

In the meantime more and more shop owners/mall leasors have gotten on board... these people have been really great, taking up the flag when they 1) don't have to , and 2) actually lose money by helping out (in loss of rentals).

Many creators have met in world - many who are hardly affected by this trend - to lend support and ideas... Fledgling steps have been taken to the forming of a 'Better business bureau' - very similar to 'Ama's stamp of approval' in the gambling script world.. Display the sign, and everyone knows they're not getting ripped off in your store.

And the march continues....

Damien:

A good idea - since all this began I've been busting my brain to come up with something that would be a simple solution, while still allowing the maximum freedom at the user end.
I've given up on there being a codable solution - as the problem lies in the root of human nature.. to some greed is good.
I was shown a script the other day that had a creator key hardcoded and would log the first owner that was different - alerting if object was passed... nice idea, though too limiting for me...
Also I grabbed a copy of the test object, deleted the script, and put it up for sale for 10 lindens in .... 5 seconds? hehe

One idea I did have I was going to tie in to a real and usable feature for the new versions of them - many people have found the (what we thing is standard) method of rez box - drag contents to inv - rez from inv.

I'm thinking of having them rez directly from the box on command -- I'm going to lable the box with 'THIS SIDE UP - THIS SIDE FORWARD' textures - then kill the box.

I plan on making the BOX itself no trans and the contents totally open.

It should make it easier for people to use - and at the same time (hopefully) make things more of a pain in the arse for anyone who wants to hock copies for a 500 lindens.

Opinions?

Siggy.
