permissions problem

I've built a structure that I want to put in a rez box and sell on XStreet SL. I linked my structure into big chunks and ran into a problem with some sculpted stairs which I thought were transferable but weren't. So I replaced the stairs with transferable ones and took them out of the linkset. However, now the other prims that were originally linked to the stairs have the permissions screwed up, they are greyed out and I can't change them. It's just a bunch of boxes that I built and the textures used on them are full perm. No scripts no nothing, just boxes. Copies made from them have the same greyed out perms.

Is there any way to fix the perms on these boxes so that I can continue without having to actually rebuild them? It's a rather complicated floor.

The permissions will be set on the root prim of the linkset.

Try unlinking the root prim and check what the permissions are. If you cannot change the permissions even when this is unlinked then rezz another prim, copy your old root prim then relink.

The permissions take on that of the root prim as long as there are no textures/scripts that have no trfr in their perms within the linkset but this will not always be obvious until you start copying and packaging the pieces.

Keep in mind that it's not only the permissions you have on each prim, but also on the contents of each prim. Sometimes it can be quite a hassle to find that one item that has the wrong permissions.

Be sure to test by transferring your object to a friend or alt.

Also, when preparing an object for tranfser, be sure to set the permissions of the rezzed object, not in your inventory. The reasons for this are complicated and have to do with "permissions baking", and I don't remember the details at the moment, but this has caused me no end of grief before I learned the rule.

Finally, don't trust the permissions of things you put in object contents to protect them fully. (This seems like a contradiction of my first paragraph, but it's not, again due to permissions baking.) For example, if I sell a poseball containing animations with xfer/no-copy permissions for next owner, I need to make sure the poseball itself is also xfer/no-copy. Otherwise, the next owner will be able to copy AND transfer the whole thing as long as it hasn't been rezzed by him or her.

Confusing, eh?

Bottom line: make sure that regarding copy and transfer, the root object is at least as restrictive as any contents you want to protect. (This does not apply to mod permissions, which don't have any baking problems.)

My comments apply to objects with contents (including contents in non-root prims). Larrie has already answered your specific question, and if your object doesn't have any contents (in any prims), you can ignore this post.
