You can split land by editing the land draw a square around the land u want to split and then hit the split land button in teh edit menu.
NOW haig said that, "Certain" sounds such as gestures, chat in IM etc will be heard, the only sounds you are limiting to a smaller parcel are the media sounds, radio and video.
hope this helps

If your land is on the mainland, you use Edit Terrain to do it. Go to your land (flying over it tends to work better than standing on the ground for this sort of thing), right-click, and choose Edit Terrain. Make sure the Select Land radio button is selected; it normally is by default. Drag your mouse over the area of land you want to break off as a separate parcel, and click the Subdivide button. You will be asked to confirm whether you really want to do it.

Once you have subdivided the land, you can set all the options for each parcel separately: name, media URLs and texture, ban lists, and so forth. Note that it's all or nothing; if you subdivide, all of those things become separate for each plot. You could use scripted objects to get some combined control back; for example, if you wanted to be able to set the music URL on both plots at once, you could put an identical chat-controlled radio on each plot.

If you ever decide you've made a mistake and want to put the land back together, you can also do that. Go to Edit Terrain, drag the mouse over the land for both parcels, and click Join.

If your land is part of a private estate, you may or may not be able to subdivide it; the estate owner can control whether you are permitted to. Estate owners often prohibit subdivision to prevent people from splitting the land into 16 sq.m. nuisance plots and selling them to advertisers; unfortunately, it also makes it impossible to split your land for the purpose of playing different media.

To continue the thought that Sara was talking about... there are several types of sound. Your parcel of land can play music and video. Anyone entering your site will hear this music if they decide to press that little button at the bottom of the screen.

Another type of sound is Ambient sound. This is a sound file that is imbedded into an object. You probably have run into them; waves crashing, birds singing, crickets cricketing, etc... These ambient sounds usually have a range on them which you can adjust. Stand next to it... you can hear it. Stand away from it and you probably cannot hear it.

The last type of sound is one that requires you to TOUCH the item. When you touch it a sound plays. I believe these also have a range on them.

So, what I'm trying to say is that dividing your land into little pieces will be practically useless unless you own a large piece of land. You don't want someone to have 4 music choices as they walk around 512m pieces of your 1000m+ land do you? Ambient sounds can have their radius reduced so you don't need to cut up your land there either.

I don't know the answer for you but at least you have a few more thoughts to think about. hahah. :)
